INVENTOR TORNEY I 65 socket.
Patented Dec. 12, 1933 A N T, D S AT S -A ENT CE Incense nxrunn LW W G 7 p M5120. 1932. serial No. 614,059
volume.',(Ci.240 -132) My invention relates more particularly to-that class of devices which are designed to hold an enclosing globe or shade for a lighting fixture.
5 Experience has shown that with the use of 5 the present high powered gas filled lamps these globes are heated to such a degree that there is considerablefexpansion of' the glassand if they are held rigidly? by means of the small thumb screws formerly used forthe purpose of holding shades in a. canopy there is considerable breakprovide a screwless holder for globes or shades which will provide a four point-suspension, thus ensuring its being supported correctly.
A further object being to provide a construction for the holder so that it can be conveniently and easily inserted in the globe and the globe can be conveniently removed for the purpose of cleaning or replacing lamp bulbs.
My means of accomplishing the foregoing ob jects may be more readily understood by having reference to the accompanying drawing which is hereunto annexed and made a part hereof,
in which-- r V Fig. 1 is a side view of a socket equippedwith my improved screwless holder, a fragmentary portion of the globe only being shown;
Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the four point suspension member; and
Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on the line 3-3 .40 in Fig. 2.
Similar reference numerals refer'to similar parts throughout theentire description.
As shown in the drawing, an electric socket 1 is supported 'by a stud 2 in the usual manner. 46, The external surface of this socket l is provided with threads which extend the entire length of the socket.
Mounted on these threads is my improved four point suspension member which consists of an upwardly extending cylindrical neck or stem 3 which has two flaring or outwardly extending arms 4 and 5 at its lower end. Threads 6 being rolledon the upper end of the neck or stem these threads fitting to the threads formed on the The comers 7 and-'8', 9 and 10, of the arms 4 and 5 respectively, are bumped or stamped into V shaped points 11 and 12, thus giving a' four point suspension upon'whichthe glass globe 13 rests. This construction has a number of desirable points or features. First of all, forming as it does, a four point suspension tends to bal- 'ance the globe in a vertical position at all times.
Secondly, the V shaped corrugations 11 and 12, the apex of which forms the suspension points, tend to stiffen the armsl'and 5 thus pervmltting them to be made of lighter gauge metal and yet be sufliciently strong. Further, the op eration of drawing in the comers of the arms slightly aids in the insertion of the holder into V the globe.-
Thirdly by providing the threaded portion of the neck or stem 3 and mounting it upon the external threads on the socket, I am able to obtain an adjustment of the globe so as to position the 76 filament of the lamp bulb'in the most desirable 1ocation.
A socket cover 14 is mounted upon the threads on the socket 1 serving to cover the socket 1 from view but primarily acting as a lock nut to lock 80 the neck or stem 3 in place when it has been adjusted to position the lamp filament (not shown) correctly.
An annular member 15 provided with a downwardly depending flange 16 is provided to be placed. over the neck or stem 3, the flange 16 extending down sufhciently to cover the neck 1'7 of the globe 13, only a fragmentary portion of which is shown, this annular member 15, when in 7 position, giving a desirable finish to the holder. At the same time it will be'apparent that there are no thumb screws or bushings employed and there is no compression on the globe so that there is no danger ofbreakage due to it being rigidly supported.
Having described my invention what I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a lighting fixture, the combination with a socket having external threads extending throughout its length, of a globe support comprising a stem having threads thereon which fit the external threads on said socket, a pair of outwardly extending arms on said stem, each of which has a pair of suspension points formed thereon adapted to contact with a globe, an ana socket having external threads extending throughout its length, of a globe support comprising a stem having threads thereon which fit the external threads on 'said socket, a pair of outwardly extending arms on said stem, a pair of inverted V shaped corrugations on each arm, the apex of said V shapes forming four points which engage a globe, an annular enclosing cap mounted on said stem, said caphaving a downwardlydepending flange to enclose. the neckyof a globe, and means to lock said stem on said socket. e
3. In a lighting fixture, the
