Description

(No Model.)
J. HEIMANN 8c M. T. WALL. Hat or other Head Covering.
No. 230,276. Patented July 20, 1880.
v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
'JULIUS HEIMANN, OF NEW YORK, AND MICHAEL T. WALL, OF BROOKLYN,
- NEW YORK.
HAT OR OTHER HEAD-COVE R ING.
SPEGLFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,276,'dated July 20, 1880.
Application filed June 10, 1880. (N model.)
To all whom it may concert t:
Be it known that we, JULIUS HEIMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York,
and 1VIIGHAEL T. WALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hats or other Head-Coverings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of headcoverings embodying a face layer of velvet, silk, satin, or other ornamental fabric. means commonly used for supporting the face layer referred to is a layer of buckram, the 'two being united by an adhesive substance; but this construction lends to the article such stiffness as to cause its cracking or breaking when it is indented or bent, while it also ren- 2o ders necessary the use of a lining.
The object of this invention is to obtain a head-covering of the character named which is sufficiently stiff to retain its shape, and at the same time is capable of being bent with- 2 5 out cracking or breaking, and which renders unnecessary the use of a lining.
To this end it consists in a head-covering in which are combined an outer or face layer of velvet or other ornamental fabric and an in-- 40 Instead of canton-flannel, we can use the fabric The known as glove-lining or any other nap fabric.
In carrying out our invention we unite the velvet or its substitute with the canton-flannel,
or the like, preferably to the plain surface of 5 I the latter, leaving the nap exposed by means of an interposed adhesive substance, as shellac, and then press the whole to the desired shape by dies in any usual or suitable manner.
It will be seeuthat by this construction we obtain a head-covering which possesses sufficient body or stifi'ness to retain the shape iinparted thereto by the dies without liability of its cracking or breaking by a bend or indentation made therein, by accident or otherwise, 5 5 and one-which hasafinish on both surfaces, thus making it practicable to dispense with the usual hat-lining.
We are aware that it is old to make headcoverings of a double layer of canton-flannel, also of a layer of can ton-flannel combined with a layer of flock, and such forms no part of our invention.
What We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' As a new article of manufacture, the headcovering herein described, consisting of an outer or face layer of velvet or other ornamental fabric and an inner layer of cantonflannel or other nap fabric united by an adhesive substance and pressed into shape, as set forth.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seals in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
