UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE CHANDLER, OF WARSAW, ILLINOIS.
SASH-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,238, dated July 20, 1880.
Application filed November 13, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEssE CHANDLER, of Warsaw, in the county of Hancock and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window Lock and Sash-Support; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to. letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. I
My invention relates to an improvement in sash-supporters, the object being to provide a self-acting device for supporting the sash at any desired adjustment; and to that end the invention consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will hereinafter be described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,-Figure l is a side elevation of a window-sash having my improved sash-support attached thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the device, and Fig. 3 is a detached view of one of the metal supporting-blocks.
A is a self-acting dog or gravity-catch pivoted to the upper window-sash, as at a, whereby it is allowed to swing freely toward and from the window-frame B. The gravity catch or dog A is constructed with a lateral projection, I), havinga beveled upper edge, 0, while the rear end is furnished with an angular projection, (I, the latter serving as a thumb and finger piece for moving the catch.
Any desired number of metal blocks 0 are secured to the window-frame, according to the varied adjustment that may be desired to be given the window sash. These blocks are formed with projections e on their rear sides, which projections enterthe woodof the windowframe as the block is screwed snugly against its seat, whereby the blocks are prevented from rotary displacement and all undue strain in the fasteningscrews obviated.
One of.the supporting-blocks G is secured to the frame of the window at a point below the top of the lower sash, for a purpose hereinafter explained.
D is a guard placed around the self-acting catch or dog A, in order to prevent the latter from being tampered with from the outside when the catch A is lowered below the top of the lower sash, the top rail of the latter being grooved to permit the passage of the guard.
The sash may be lowered by simply forcing the catch or dog A laterally away from its supporting-block, when it will by its gravity fall back and catch on the supporting-block.
When the sash is raised .the catch or dog A is automatically thrown outward or away from the supporting-block by reason of its beveled or inclined edge striking its under side of the block, thus forcing the catch away from the same and allowing it to be raised and adjusted Without adjusting the catch or dog.
Guard D is constructed with upper and lower flanges, g y, and side flange, Z), said flanges projecting outwardly from the window-sash, while the side i of the guard, located adjacent to the window-frame, is left open. The gravity dog or catch A is pivoted and adapted to swing within the guard.
When the window-sash is in its raised position the gravity-dog may be readily actuated; but when lowered so that the guard is below the lower sash the guard prevents access being had to the gravity dog or catch.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the metal blocks 0, attached to the window-frame, of a gravity catch or dog, A, and a guard, D, the latter constructed with upper and lower flanges, g g, and side flange, b, the side 'i being formed without a flange, and the catch or dog pivoted within said guard-flanges, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 3d day of November, 187 9.
JESSE CHANDLER.
