Description

No. 230,016.. Patented July 13, 1880.
INV'ENTOR ATTORNEYS.
kLFETENS, FHOTO-UTNOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT "OFFICE.
FREDERICK G. HUNTER, OF MONOTON, NEW BRUNSWICK.
CARD-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,016, dated July 1 3, 1880.
Application filed May 26, 1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK G. HUNTER,
of Moncton, New Brunswick, have invented a new and Improved Gard-Holder, of which the 5 following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a cheap and simple device, especially designed for railroad-cars, to be affiXed to the out-sides thereof for holding and protecting cards of address, &c.
The invention consists in an improved cardholder constructed substantially as hereinafter described.
Figure 1 represents a front elevation of the r 5 device, with a portion broken away, the better to exhibit other parts. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A represents a car; B B, the top and bottom plates, respectively, fastened by screws or otherwise upon the said car.
0 G are the parallel side rods, having their ends inserted into the sockets a a in the plates B B, and having on their inner faces the toothed flanges b b, the teeth of which serve to hold the card Fin place when pressed down on said card by the action of the spring D. This spring D consists of one or more straight rods, whose ends rest on the flanges b b of said side rods, O O, and whose central point or points are held down by the finger E, through which the said rods are passed horizontally, said finger E being attached to the center of 3 5 the top plate, B.
. G G are the thumb-pieces, fixed on the outer faces of the side rods, 0 G, near the upper ends thereof. Pressure down upon said thumbpieces G G turns the side rods, 0 O, in their sockets, so that the toothed flanges I) b are 40 raised that a card may be inserted or withdrawn from beneath them.
H is the sloping cap or cover, secured to the car A immediately above the other parts of the device, to protect it and the cards held by it from rain, 850., said cap H being designed to project forward sufficiently for that purpose.
I is another rod, placed a short distance from the rods 0 G and parallel therewith, the said rod I being fastened in position on the car A by having its ends bent downward at right angles and driven into said car, and so that sufficient space shall be left between said rod and car to admit of theinsertion of acard. This rod I, though a part of the device herein shown and described, is used only when long cards, 850., whose ends require further support, are placed in the rack.
Having thus described myinvention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As an improved article of manufacture, a card-rack, constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of socketed plates B B, flanged and toothed side rods, 0 0, provided with thumb-pieces G G, spring D, held by finger E, and cap H, as set forth.
FREDERICK GEORGE HUNTER.
