J. G. SEBR ING. Hat for Wear in Hot Weather.
No. 229,918. Patented July 13, 1880,
N-FEIERS. FHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
JOSEPH O. SEBRING, OF MILL CREEK TOWNSHIP, WABAUNSEE COUNTY,
' KANSAS.
HAT FOR WEAR IN HOT WEATHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,918, dated July 13, 1880.
Application filed J annary 21, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH G. SEBRING, of MillOreek township, W'abaunsee county, State of Kansas, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hats for Wear in Hot Weather, of .which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My improvement relates to a hat for wear in hot weather; and it consists in the construction of the band in detachable sections which may be disconnected from each other, and each of which is connected .to the outer frame by flexible bars and joint-rods, so that when the sections are disconnected they may be laid against the inside of the shade part to allow the hats to be packed together in nests in small compass.
My invention also consists in making the band adjustable in circumference at the joints by forming two or moreslots in one end of the section for the engagement of the hook of the next section.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an inside View of the hat with the sections of the band attached together ready for wear. Fig. 2 is a half inside view with the band-sections disconnected to put the hat in condition for packing. Fig. 3 is a fore-and -aft axial section. Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of the ends of two band-sections with the cover removed.
A is the shade proper. This consists of a cover of any suitable material, a, stretched over a supporting-frame consisting of ribs a 11, extending from the apex a of the crown to the brim B, where is a hoop, G, to which the ribs are preferably connected.
The edge of the cover A is secured to the hoop B bylapping aroundit, or by other means.
D is a spring-frame, consisting of two or more ribs, 61 d, secured to the frame A at the apex, and at the outer ends rigidly attached to the sections 0 of the head-band E. I prefer to make these sections of metal and cover them with leather or any other suitable material but they need not be covered. Especially would this be the case if they were made of hard rubber or other material whose direct contact with the head would not be objectionable.
Each rib d may be attached to a single section, 0, near the middle of the latter, as shown, or each section may be supported on one or more ribs.
The sections are connected together (to form the band) to a hook, e, at one end, which engages in one of a series consisting of two or more slots, 6 0 at the end of the adjoining section.
The duplication of the slots 6 0 makes the band adjustable in circumference, so as to fit any ordinary-sized head.
The sections are connected to the ribs to a by links F, which are jointed to the band-sections and the ribs in any suitable manner, so that the sections can be placed in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3 or in the position shown in Fig. 2 without violence to the connections.
In the construction of cover I do not confine myself to the shape which is shown in the drawings, as it admits of considerable variation without change in the principle of the invention. For in stance, the lower edge may be turned out in a brim of any desired width and shape.
I claim as my invention- -1. The combination of cover a,ribs a, springfraine D, and head-band E, made in detachable sections a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The head-band E, composed of the sections 6, each having at one end hook e and at the otherend slots 6 6 as and for the purpose set forth. 7
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand this 15th day of December, 1879.
JOSEPH O. SEBRING.
