SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 563,17 5, dated June 30, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, SIMON S. HIRSCHBEEG, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Caps, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in caps especially adapted for wear by bicycleriders and other athletes and Sportsmen, and it has for its object the provision of a cap wherein there is a Ventilating-space and a crown-section of suicient fullness, or having surplus material suihcient to close the ventilating-space when the condition of the weather renders this desirable.

To this end the invention consists in the novel construction ,combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the cap with the ventilator open, and Fig. 2 is a like view showing the crown-section adjusted to close or cover the ventilator.

In the said drawings the reference-numeral 6 indicates the base-section of the cap, and 8 the vizor thereof.

The numeral 10 indicates the crown-band, which is connected to and suitably held spaced apart or separated from the base-section 6 by means of isolated rigid braces 7. These braces are few in number and at a distance from each other, four being indicated in the drawings. These braces are preferably riveted to the crown-band 10, and do not rise or extend beyond such band, and therefore do not interfere with the fiexibility or collapsibility of the crown-section. The braces being comparatively short and few in number do not add materially to the weight of the cap, and being isolated from each other provide an almost entirely unbroken ventilating-space l, through which the air has free access directly to the head of the wearer.

The crown-section 2 3 4 5 5 is of soft flexible or collapsible material and the form thereof is maintained by the crown-band lO. This crown-section is made full at the front portion, as at 5a, and at the rear portion, as at 3 et, in order that when the condition of the weather requires it may be folded down and over the Serial No. 583,890. Ventilating-space l, so as to close or cover the same and prevent access of air to the head of the wearer. The degree of fullness necessary to be provided in order that the crown-section may perform this useful function may readily be determined by actual measurement. At the front of the cap or at the vizor 8 suitable ventilation can also be secured by well-known means, such as a Ventilating sweat-band. When the cap is on the head, the wearer can, without removing the same, manipulate the crown-section to cover the Ventilating-space when it is raining or when it is otherwise desirable, and may as readily move the same to uncover said space. This manipulation may be effected by the wearer merely passing his hand over the crown-section in a rearward direction to close the ventilating-space, and in a forward direction to open the same. A button 9 may be provided, if desired, to be grasped by the wearer in manipulating the crown-seotion. The advantages of a cap constructed in accordance with my invention are obvious. For example, in making tours, as on abicycle,

or in traveling, varying conditions of temperature maybe encountered, as in going to and from the seashore, or when ascending or descending the mountains, or in continued exposure, as for example, in going out by day and remaining out until nightfall. Its advantage for use by players of base-ball and other athletic games and sports is equally obvious.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- A cap comprising a vizor, a base-section, and a crown-section separated from said basesection and secured thereto by means of rigid braces whereby a space is formed between the crown-section and the base section, said crown-section being flexible and made of suficient fullness to fold over the base-section to cover-the said space when on the head of the wearer, substantially as described.
