Description

UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTIAN STATTMANN AND FRIEDERICH S'IT'IMANN, OF CHICAGO, ILL.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAPS.y
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,092, dated October 23, 1866 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHRISTIAN STATTMANN and FRIEDERIGH STATTMANN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Convertible Caps 5 and we do hereby declare 4and make known that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters and figures marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of our said invention consists in providing a cap to be worn upon the head with a reversible flap or semi-covering, whose sides are composed of different material, as glazed cloth upon one side and any ordinary material upon the other, so that by adjusting said flap upon the front or rear part of the cap, as hereinafter described, the said cap is readily converted into a glazed cap for wet weather and a cloth cap for ordinary' wear, or into caps of any different style or color of material, as del sired.
reference in so doing to the aforesaid drawings, in which- Figure l represents a side view of our invention` with the aforesaid flap arranged upon the front part of the cap. Fig. 2 represents a similar view thereof with the said flap arranged upon the rear partof the cap, and Fig. 3 is a side View of the same with the flap raised up from the front and ready to be turned down upon the rear of the cap.
The same letters of reference in the several gures denote the same parts of our invention, which we will now specifically describe.
A represents the aforesaidreversible and adjustable flap, Whose exterior, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is of glazed cloth suitable for wear in rainy weather, corresponding in material with the rear portion of the cap, (marked 13,) so that when adjusted as shown in Fig..1, and the lower part secured to the buttons b b by the loops a a, as shown, the entire cap, or exterior surface thereof, is of the glazed waterproof material deseribedthe top being whole or of a single piece, as in ordinary caps. The interior face of said iiap, or the face turned outward, as shown in Fig. 2, is made of cloth, and corresponds with the material and style ofthe front portion of the cap, (marked C,) as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and when adjusted as shown in Fig. 2, and th'e lower part secured by the loops a a to the buttons c c, as represented, the entire cap,y or the exterior surface thereof', is of the ordinary material or cloth, making a cloth cap with its top of a single piece, as in caps of the ordinary kind.
The front and rear parts of the cap, (marked i C and 13,) being of different material, as described, are made in separate parts upon the sides, as seen in' Fig. 3, the loose interior lining, however, being made in the usual manner, if desired. The said front and rear parts, C B, are then connected by inserting an elastic band, D, between said parts, as shown, thereby constituting a cap which is eXpansible or variable as to size, the loops a'a, which secure the flap A to the cap, being also elastic for this purpose. Y
The two features herein described have no necessary rela-tion with each other, and each may be used independently of the other., Having described our inventiomwe will now specify what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The employment of the reversible iap A, in combination with a cap whose front and rear parts are composed of different material, arranged and operating substantially as described and shown.
2. In a cap whose sides are slotted or separated, as described, the employment of an elastic insertion or connection, D, substantially as and for the purposes specitied.
CHRISTIAN STATTMANN. FRIEDERICH STATTMANN.
