Description

UNITED STATES v PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH H. REURY, OF HONESDALE, PENN SYI VANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND BENJAMIN L. WOOD, OF SAME PLACE.
BLlND-SLAT' OPERATQ R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,183, dated. June 22, 1880.-
Application filed April 29, 1880. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH H. REURY, a citizen of the United'States, residing at Honesdale,in the county of Wayne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blind-Slat Operators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to blind-slats or slat operators; and its object is to provide a device for operating and adjusting the slats of blinds, and for locking such slats to prevent them from being opened from the outside, the
apparatus being inexpensive to manufacture and easily and coiweniently operated.
My invention consists in the combination and arrangement of the various operative parts, as fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side, and Fig. 2 a top, View.
A represents the window-blind, B the slats, and O the slat-rod, all of ordinary construc- 0 tion.
To the lower rail of the blind is secured a segmental plate. D, provided with a curved slot, (1. The screw which fastens the plate passes through an ear, I), cast with the plate,
- 5 and an additional fastening is afforded by a stud or point, b, on the plate D, which is driven into the wood.
E is a connecting-rod, formed from a piece of metal U-shaped in section, which is se- 0 cured to the lower end of the slat-rod by compressing it tightly around such rod. The lower end of the rod has a circular enlarged head, 0,
which receives a screw-bolt, d, by which the rod is pivoted in the slot in the plate D. The
5 screw-bolt 01 passes through the slot and ex tends beyond the opposite side of the plate D,
and is provided with a knob, e. ,A washer, f,
is placed on the bolt, and between this washer and the head a is a spring, g, (shown as a short length of rubber tubing,) though aspiral spring may be used instead.
A recess, h, is formed in the plate D, as shown in Fig. 1, leaving a circular shoulder, against which the head 0 bears, and in which position it is held by the spring. When, therefore, the head engages with the recess the slats are closed and cannot be opened from the outside.
In operating the device, supposing the slats to be closed, pressure is applied to the knob e, and the head 0 disengaged from the recess against the pressure of the spring. The slats are then opened by sliding the bolt in the slotted plate. When the pressure on the knob is relaxed the recoil of the spring holds the washer firmly against the plate D. The slats may thus be held open in any position simply by friction, and the use of bindingcams or other similar devices is obviated.
In order that'both upper and lower slats may be operated by a single plate on the lower rail, I use the connecting-rod E, composed of a strip of metal bent at the ends into a U shape, which are compressed around the upper and lower slat-rods, as shown, and form acheap 7 5 and efiicient construction.
The advantages of my device lie in the ease with which it can be operated and the simplicity of construction, which, while it prevents the slats from being opened from the outside, also permits their adjustment to all positions on the inside.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The described blind-slat operator, consisting of the plate D, having the recess h, the connecting-rod E, the pin (1, working in the slot at in plate D, and the spring g, the device being adapted to lock the slats in a closed po- 0 sition, and to hold them at any angle when open by friction, as described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
