Description

H. ALLEN. Fan-Blower.
No. 228,293. Patented June1,18 80.
A TTORNE r WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
. HENRY ALLEN, OF BUGKDTGHAM P. 0., PENNSYLVANIA.
FAN-BLOWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,293, dated June 1, 1880.
Application filed November 8, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY ALLEN, ofBuckingham P. 0., in the county of Bucks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fan-Blowers; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a fan-blower constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same; Fig. 3, atransverse vertical section; and Fi 4 is a reverse-side elevation of the fan-case.
My invention has relation to fan-blowers; and it consists in the novel construction of the rotary fan, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A indicates a base, in which are inserted and made fast by mortise and tenon two uprights, B B, stayed by braces O G.
D represents a metallic cross-bar with depending ends 01 d, which is fastened to the uprights and serves to steady the same.
E represents the main driving-shaft, which has hearings in boxes 6 e, bolted to the uprights B B. Said shaft is square between its journals, and on it is mounted a driving-pulley,
F. Said pulley consists of a metallic hub, f, having a squared socket or opening, f, for the shaft E, asurronnding wooden hub, f spokes f and fellies f said spokes and fellies being integral with said wooden hub.
The metal hubfis formed with a head,f", which is fastened to the wooden hub by bolts j', which pass through the latter, as shown.
G represents another pulley, fast on a square shaft, 9, which has screw pivot-bearings g g in the uprights B'B. Said pulley is run by means of a belt, H, from the main pulley F, the object of having double pulleys being to obtain a high rate of speed, which could not be obtained with a single pulley unless the lattenwere of great size.
I represents the fanshaft, which is square, and has screw pivot -beari.ngs I I in the braces G 0. Near one of said bearings, and on said shaft, is a pulley, 1 on which runs a belt, K, from the pulley G, and near the other end of said shaft is located the fan L. Said fan consists of a hub, l,into which are screwed radial arms I l, on which are riveted the blades or wings I.
M represents the fan-casing, which is made of wood, in two vertically-partible sections, on m, held together by bolts m m, which pass through both of said sections.
The fan-chamber M is formed with concave walls, and the nose or air-outlet M is integral with the body of the casing, being projections of the sections m m, as shown.
The casing M is bolted to the adjacent brace 0, whereby it is steadied and rendered secure.
By means of the pivot-bearin gs the fan may be started almost instantly and at a high rate of speed. The pulley I and fan L, being lo cated near opposite ends of the shaft I, serve to balance one another; and as said shaft, as wellas the pulley-shaft g, has screw-bearings, they may be readily adjusted to take up wear or lost motion.
The casing, being entirely of wood, except the bolts which fasten its sections together, may be constructed at slight expense; and being light in weight, (as are the pulleys F G, being mostly composed of wood,) the entire apparatus is rendered easily portable.
As the pulley F, constructed specifically as described and shown, may not be properly claimed as an element of a combination including the fan, I herein disclaim said pulley, reserving the right to incorporate and claim the same in another application.
What 1 claim as my invention is- In combination with square shaft 1, thehub l, threaded arms I I, screwed into said hub, and blades l Z riveted to said arms, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of November, 1879.
HENRY ALLEN.
