(m M H. M. SMITIL ROTARY FAN. 1109251772. Patented M-ayQ, 1882.

PATENT OFFICE.
HOWARD M. SMITH, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
' ROTARY FAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,772, dated May 9, 1882. Application filed August 5, 1881. (No model.)
lo all whom, zt may concern Be it known that I, HOWARD M.
State of Missouri,
have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Rotary Fans, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention consists in the hereinafter-described combination of a fan with itsmotor, and to the construction of said motor.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is part in side elevation and part in section at planes marked a a and b b on Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a section at c c, Fig. 1. I
A is the case, supported on legs B or otherwise, and having a head, A,connected to the body by tie-bolts passing through lugs liu the head and the body. This case contains an annular piston-chamber, O, occupied by the buckets D upon the periphery of the piston-wheel E. Just within the buckets the piston has an annular groove, F, on each side, to receive packing-ribs a on the head and the plate A The periphery of the plate A fits in annular rabbet-grooyes formed in the body and head, so that when these parts are tightly secured together a close joint is formed between them and the plate A. A jet of steam enters the piston-chamber G in a tangential direction, being directed upon the-buckets D to cause the rotation of the piston-wheel. The live'steam pipe is shown at G. It is screwed into a connecting-piece, H, which screws'into a socket, Least upon the head of the case. The socket is bored out to fit the removable steam-nozzle J, which is dropped into position and the connecting-piece H screwed down against it to (It is important that the hold it in position.
nozzle should be made removable, as the steam wears the orifice and renders it too large for best efficiency.) After passing some distance through the pistonchamber O, the steam 0scapes through the exhaust-pipe K.
L L are the spokes of the piston-wheel, and M the hub of the same, fast upon the shaft N. The shaft N turns in bearings O and P upon the head A and the plate A respectively. The rotary fan is also attached to the shaft, so that the piston-wheel and the fan rotate together. The fan has a hub, Q, arms R, and vanes S. -T is the induction-opening of the fan-chamber W, and U the eduction-opening.
I do not contine myself to a single steamjet, I J, and ednction-openiug or exhaust-pipe K, as one, two, or more may be used.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of case A, side plate, A having bearing P, and head A, having bearing 0, the said case, side plate, and head adapted to form a piston-chamber, C, and fanchamber W, as set forth.
2. The rotary piston with buckets l) and packing-grooves, combined with the packing ribs a of the case, for the purpose set forth.
3.'The removablejet-nozzle J, in combination with the head A, having socket I, the conmeeting-piece H, and the steam-pipe 'G, thejetnozzle being adapted to be dropped into position, as set forth.
4. The combination of head A, havin g socket I, the nozzle J, connectingpiece H, steam-pipe G, and exhaust-pipe K, as set forth.
HOWARD M. SMITH.
