Description

JfW. Hoeef Basket.
No. 226585 4. Patehted April 27,1880.
\H ATWRNEY ",FETERS, PHOTO-UTHOGRAFNER, WASHINGTON. 947x UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JOHN WV. HOGG, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
BASKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 226,854, dated April 2'7, 1880.
Application filed September '25, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, J OHN W. Hoes, of Washington, in the county of Washington and District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baskets; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in baskets, and more particularly to that class used by officials and business men generally for the reception of mail matter, letters requiring attention waste-papers, 85G.
Prior to myinvention it has been necessary, in separating papers of importance from such as are useless, to have two or more independent and separate baskets, and where they are to be used in the distribution of mail matter or oflicial correspondence of any magnitude the increased number of baskets necessary greatly cucumbers the space surrounding the desk at which they are used, and render their use troublesome and the room unsightly.
The object of my invent-ion is to provide in a simple compact form a basket possessing all the advantages as a receptacle of several baskets, and at the same time to present a neat and tasty appearance; and with these ends in view my invention consists of a basket having a practically closed top and bottom, with one or more openings on its side for the passage of waste-paper, and flared outwardly above the top so as to form a saucer-like receptacle for a second independent basket, whereby a double or triple basket is produced, as will be hereinafter more fully and in detail explained.
In order that others may more fully understand my invention, 1 will pgoceed to describe the construction and advantages, referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a basket embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 a vertical central section of the same.
Similar letters indicate like parts in both figures.
A is a basket, preferably in the design of a truncated cone, having the upper portion of its wall flared outwardly to form a receptacle, B, this receptacle B and lower basket, A, bein g divided or separated by a partition, F, thus forming an upper and lower basket.
The lower basket, A, is provided at any suitable point or points on its side with a chute or opening, D, and its lower end is closed by a hinged or removable bottom, E, which may swing downwardly on a hinge-joint, b, and be fastened in position to close the basket by any suitable catch 0.
The upper basket, B, may be formed by a continuation of the side walls of the lower basket, A, or it may be made separate therefrom and secured in place by a hinge-joint, a, so that it may be raised up to obtain access to the interior of the lower basket, A.
G is an independent basket, made of such design andproportions as to readily lit within and be supported by the upper receptacle or cover, B, and afford a triple receptacle.
In the use of my improved basket it will be observed that when in the compact form shown at Fig. 2 a government official or a business man, in opening and attending to the daily mail, deposits such matter as is necessary for the attention or care of a second party in the upper independent basket, 0, and throws all waste paper or undesirable matter through the chute D into the waste-basket A.
The basket 0, when it has been sufficiently loaded, may be removed by a messenger, leaving still a receptacle, B, into which important papers may be placed during the absence of the messenger, so that the basket D, occupying a single space, practically performs the service of three baskets.
When the lower portion, D, has become full from the accumulations of waste paper, its bottom E may be unfastened and the contents dumped in an obvious manner; and if at any time a paper disposed of as waste is necessary to be again looked at or recovered, the upper basket or cover, B, is raised, affording free access to the interior of the basket A.
The chute D may be of any desired size or design, and there may be one or more located at any desirable points.
It is, of course, immaterial whether my improved basket be made of wood or other maand independent basket, substantially as de- 10 terial, so long as it embodies the features of scribed.
the invention described.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A basket formed with practically closed top and bottom, and provided with one or more chutes, and flared at the upper end to form a receptacle or saucer-like support for a second In testimony whereof I place my hand and seal.
JNO. W. HOGG.
In presence of- WM. 0. MCINTIRE, CHAS. W. HANDY.
