E. ELY. Anti-Rattler for Thil'l-floupli'ngs. No. 225,975 Patented'Maf. so, 1880.

ELLSWORTH ELY, OF LOOKPORT, NEW YORK.
ANTl-RATTLER FOR THlLL-COUPLINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,975, dated March 30, 1880.
Application filed January 27, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELLSWORTH ELY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Lookport, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Im provements in Anti-Battling Devices for Shaft-Shackles,'of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to prevent the rattling of shaft or thill couplings; and it consists of a cast metallic shell made concave on one side, so as to present a large wearing-surflice to the periphery of the shafteye, and provided with a socket on the opposite side to receive the large end of a coneshaped coiled spring, the outer end of the spring being small or pointed, so as to allow the concave portion of the shell to adjust itself, so that its whole surface shall press evenly against the periphery of the shaft-eye or other similar device to which it may be applied, whether it be exactly in line or not, which would not be the case if the ordinary spiral spring were used, as will be more clearly shown by reference to the dra-Win gs,in which Figure l is an end elevation; Fig. 2, a plan or top view Fig. 3, a vertical section through the center of the shell in line X X, Fig. 2; and Fig. i represents a longitudinal section through a portion of a thill-coupling, showing my invention in position.
A represents the shell, which is of cast metal, and is formed with the GOIICEING side 13, to fit around the shaft-eye sufliciently to holdit in position and to present a large wearingsurface to the periphery of the shaft-eye between the ears of a shaft-shackle. It is provided on each end with a projection, G, to fit between the ears of the shackle. On the back side of the shell A is a socket, D, to receive from its place, and consequently this would 7 be unnecessary.
The spring E is made. of aflat thin strip of steel, and is formed so that the Widthinstead of the thickness takes the strain, thereby producing a stronger spring in the same compass than can be made in the ordinary way.
In Fig. 4 l have shown the device in the proper position to preventthe rattling of a shaft or thill. F is the back of the shackle, against which the small end of the spring presses; and G represents theshaft-eye, against the periphery of which the concave portion of the shell is fitted, and presses with sufficient force to prevent rattling.
This device is much more durable than the ordinary leather or rubber spring used for the same purpose; besides, itis stronger and better adapted for the purpose.
I claim as my invention An anti-rattling device consisting of the shell A, having the concave side B, ends 0, and socket D, in combination with the coneshaped spring E, constructed substantially as specified, for the purposes described.
, ELLSWORTH ELY.
