J. DOTY. ANTI-RATTLEB FOB THILL COUPLINGS.
No. 425,867. Patented Apr. 15, 1890.
7/) WJIJVESSES Oi /M UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH DOTY, OF WVELLSVILLE, NEXV YORK.
ANTl-RATTLER FOR THlLL-COUPLINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,867, dated April 15, 1890. Application filed August 28, I889. Serial No, 322,219- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH DOTY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wells- Ville, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Anti-Battlers for Thill- Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in anti-rattlers for thill-couplings.
Heretofore it has been proposed to make the anti-rattler of rubber or to employ a coiled spring, and it has been found by experience that the rubber soon becomes, by reason of its exposure to the weather, hardened and nonelastic, and consequently useless, as also the spring for the same reason.
The leading object of my invention is the production of an anti-rattler, which will form a perfect cushion for the draw-iron, and will receive and withstand the pressure brought to bear upon the anti-rattler, and also withstand the damaging infiuence of the weather.
A further object of the invention is the production of a device which can be applied to any thill-coupling quickly and with ease, and which may be produced at a very low cost.
To attain the desired object the invention consists of an elastic block or cushion adapted .to be inserted between the shackle and drawiron, and containing'and holding in place a coiled-Wire spring, which bears normally upon the said shackle and draw-iron.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 represents a perspective-view of a thill-coupling with my anti-rattler applied. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the anti-rattler detached, and Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal sectional View thereof.
The anti-rattler consists of a rubber or elastic block or cushion A, having a coiled-wire spring B, placed therein in such a manner that the ends bear against the thill and drawiron. In this instance the cushion is formed with a bore or passage 0 to receive the spring.
The device is placed in position, as shown in the drawings, and the draw-iron exerting pressure against the spring compresses the same, and the compressing of the spring causes it to form a firm cushion for the drawiron, thereby effectually preventing all rattling and resisting the force or strain brought to bear thereon.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An anti-rattler consisting of a rubber or other elastic block provided with a longitudinal bore, in combination with a coiled spring passing entirely through said bore, substantially as set forth.
2. An anti-rattler consisting of an elastic cushion having a bore therein, and a compound spring arranged in said bore, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In an anti-rattler for thill-couplings, the combination, with a shackle provided with the usual forwardly-extending ears, a drawiron pivoted between said ears, of an elastic cushion disposed between the ears of the shackle, said cushion provided with a longitudinal bore having its front face concave to fit against the periphery of the draw-iron eye, in combination with a coiled spring passing through said bore, one end thereof pressing against the rear of the shackle and the opposite end against the periphery of the drauiron, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH DOTY.
Witnesses:
HIRAM BREESE, JOHN MCPHERSON.
