Description

HTP'BNTON. LinefFastener.
No. 225,923 Patented Mar. 30, 1:880.
IIL
UNITED STATES l PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE FENTON, CF WETHERSFIELD, CONNECTICUT.
LINE-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,923, dated March 30, 1880.
Application filed February 16, 1880.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE FENTON, of Wethersfield, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements pertaining to a Hitch- Block for Ropes, &c., of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the i accompanying drawings, where- Figure 1 is a perspective, showing top and one side ofthe hitch-block. Fig. 2 is a perspective, showing the bottom and one side of the hitch-block. Fig. 3 shows a section on the line x m of Fig. 2.
The letter a denotes the containing-case, preferably made of metal and cast in one piece. The letter b denotes the hinged lid or cover thereof, and c the hinged clamp to hold the lid shut. The case is provided with the screw d, whereby the device may be attached to a post or the like. Within the case is a cogged roll orroll-gear, c, traveling on a cogged ratch,f. Preferably, but not necessarily, the opposite side of the case bears another cogged ratch, g. The letter 7L denotes the rope, cord7 orline. Theratch f is inclined,so that as the cogged roll falls back from the mouth i the rope is free to run but when the cogged roll approaches the mouth t' it catches the rope between itself and the opposite side of the case and holds it from running out.
It will be readily understood that a pull on the rope in the direction denoted by the arrow will loosen the rope so that it will run, and that a pull in the opposite direction will tighten it so that it will not run.
I have devised a modification of this invention to be applied to a pulley-block, in which the pulley-block takes the place ofthe cogged ratch g. The details of that modiication I reserve as subject-matter for other Letters Patent 5 but the general operating principle isthe same as in the device herein described.
I claim as my invention- In combination, the case a, provided with the lid b, the screw d, and ratchesf g, and the cogged roll c, substantially as described.
HORACE FENTON. Witnesses:
WM. E. SinoNDs, RoBr. F. GAYLORD.
