Definitions
- Self-propelling machines for holding and turning heavy work to be forged are known in which a device which carries the tongs for holding the work comprises a number of parts which are able, to make angular movements relatively one to another, and pressure or tension springs, which are fitted between these parts take up the additional load which occurs during forging.
- a device which carries the tongs behaves as if it were almost entirely rigid since the springs are too short to act as effective buffers.
- advantage is that in the known machine the carrier for the tongs is supported by-twolifting cylinders which act independently. It is then impossible to prevent the movements of 'the lifting cylinders differing somewhat from one another, the result of whichis that the carrier does not maintain a horizontal position as is desired when forging.
- the object of the present invention is to provide an'apparatusof the kind described in which the aforesaid disadvantages are" ob-- viated.
- the carrier for the tongs is resiliently suspended from four points on a linkage whichis actuated by-a single lifting cylinder.
- a pair of bell-crank levers is pivoted at each, side to the "frame of the machine, and the levers of each pair are linked together by a bar connected to the end of one arm of each of the levers while tothe ends of the other armsof the four levers are pivoted four upright rods whichcarry long helical springs on which the carrier for the tongs is supported.
- the carrier is therefore able to makelongitudinal movements and can yieldunder the load which occurs owing to extension during forging while the vertical supporting springs can swing about the pivots on which the rods which support them are mounted.
- FIG. 1 is a side elevation of the machine
- Figure 2 shows the central portion of the machine with the carrier for the tongs displaced
- Figure 3 shows three sections on the lines AB and CD of Figure 2 respectively
- Figure 4 is a broken-off the 1ine AA of Figure 5, and
- Figure 5 is a broken-off horizontal section on line 3-3 of Figure 4.
- the frame I of the self-propelled machine is supported on wheels 2, 3, of which the steering wheel 2 isldriven by a
- the driving gear of the vehicle has two separate controls.
- the motor is controlled by means. of a controlling drum.
- the machine can be intermittently moved for- Wards or backwards by foot-actuated pedals in accordance with the feed necessary during forging.
- pivots 5 and 6 at each longitudinal side of theframe vl are pivotally mounted bell-crank levers 1, 8 which are connected transversely in pairs by pivot bars 9, l0 respectively, and longitudinally in pairs by rods II.
- a lifting cylinder l2 in the centre of the machine acts on the pivot bar I 0.
- the lifting cylinder ( Figures 4 and 5) is supported through trunnion pins c by. brackets d carried by a transverse plate e which is secured at each end to frame I.
- Piston ,f carries piston rod a which is securedto pivot bar II).
- the cylinder On each side of the piston, the cylinder is in communication through pipes g, h and suitable valves with a source of fluid under pressure, whereby the ,piston may be reciprocated to rock bell-crank levers 8 and, through rods H, levers 1.
- the cylinder rocks in response to changes in elevation of bar Ill.
- the other ends of the levers carry, on pivots l3, [4, long vertical bolts l5 and I6 around which are disposed helical springs I1 and IS on which 7 supporting arms 19, 20 for the member 2
- the helical springs act, through the agency of the bushes 30, 3
- the actual tongs 33 for holding the work to be forged are revolubly mounted the carrier 2
- a self-propelled machine for holding and moving heavy work to be forged, comprising a wheeled frame, means for propelling the frame,
- the machine may run without rails or; may be constructed as a rail vehicle.
- a self-propelled machine for holding and moving heavy Work to be forged comprising a Wheeled frame, means for propelling the frame, a tongsfor holding the Work, apair, of "belle crank levers pivotally mounted at either side of said frame, aibar pivotedjto one arm ofgeach' lever of each pair of said levers, upright rods pivoted to the other arms .of said levers, helical springs disposed around said rods, a tongs-care rying member supported by said helical springs, and a single lifting cylinder by which said bellcrank levers can be turned about their pivots 2.
