My invention pertains to a bib appliance and more particularly to a supporting structure as a form-fitting collar adapted to encircle the neck of a child and detachably to carry a bib or a napkin, preferably of absorbent paper of very low cost and intended to be used only once.

One object of my invention has been to design a simple, cheap and durable structure capable of being manufactured and sold as a premium article in five and ten cent stores. Another object has been the support of one edge of a very low priced bib material, for instance, absorbent paper tissue, between a pair of flaps depending from the bottom of the collar or alternatively from the yoke of a dress.

Adverting to the drawing:

Fig. 1 is a plan view of a bib appliance embodying my invention.

Fig. 2 is a cross section, on enlarged scale, taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a modification illustrating the application of the bib holder as a permanent part of a garment.

The support I has the general shape of a collar interiorly defined by a loop 2 and terminating above as two narrowed ends 3 and 4 which are respectively provided, as exemplified, by co-acting glove snap fasteners 5 and 6 whereby the ends 3 and 4 may be detachably secured together around the wearers neck. If desired, more than one pair of the fastening devices may be provided to furnish adjustability, as will be readily understood.

As appears. in Fig. 2 a corresponding forward pair of depending flaps I and 8 each carries the female or socket member 9 of a glove snap comprising a recess l0 and the pair of rearward flaps II are shown as separate pieces sewn along the stitch line l2 and each carries the co-acting male or stud member l3 of the glove snap combination and comprising the projection l4 for snug occupancy within the recess III. In use,

a paper bib is ofiset, spread laterally, curled or doubled back and locked and a desirably large annular area thereof is securely clamped between the fiat appositioned annular glove-snap surfaces which surround the stud and socket respectively. I would have it. understood that instead of having the rear flaps ll initially separate pieces the entire collar structure might be composed of two pieces of pre-formed fabric sewn together in any preferred manner above the stitch lines l2, but left separated below the line. This shoulder-form-fitting collar of considerable area insures conformity of the bib with the chest contour of the wearer.

Th purpose of the cooperating depending flaps I l, 8 and II is to confine therebetween the upper margin of an absorbent paper bib l5 which will be offset or deformed and sometimes punctured at two places when the members 9 and I3 are pressed together. With consideration of the fact that this appliance is not alone for dental or nose and throat treatment, but for use on infants where it is desirable to have the latter guaranteed against injury, observe that the glove snaps provide a safety feature whereas pointed jaw grippers might grievously injure a child.

The modification of Fig. 3 shows in substitution for the collar 1, a yoke l6 which is a permanent part of a garment l1 and with the yoke terminating as two spaced depending flaps l8 each adapted to be secured to the bib by glove snap combination I!) after the upper portions of the bib I5 has been inserted between the co-acting members of the glove snaps I9.

It is to be realized that the scope of my intions. The showing of the drawing and the particular description are merely specific exemplifications of a plurality of mechanical embodiments and arrangements.

I claim:

1. A bib appliance comprising the combination of a holder adapted to encircle the neck of a wearer and partly fashioned as a two-ply assembly with certain depending portions loosely appositoned, interengaging clamping members secured to said depending portions respectively, one of said members comprising a stud and formed with a fiat clamping surface therearound and the other of said members being formed with a socket and with a fiat'clamping surface therearound, and a paper bib having a margin interposed between said clamping members, the latter deforming the material with resulting increased areas thereof to be engaged and compressed between the cooperating flat surfaces whereby a stronger attachment to a tearable bib is provided.

In a bib appliance, the combination of a' support provided with means for attachment to a wearer, a pair of relatively movable suspension flaps appositionally carried by said support, a readily deformable bib having a margin interposed between said suspension flaps and interlocking glove-snap devices secured to said flaps respectively, one of said devices comprising a stud and a surrounding area disposed at an angle to said stud, the other one of said devices being formed with a socket and with a surrounding area complementary to said first mentioned area, said devices cooperating to clamp a substantial area of said bib whereby to increase resistance to tearing dislodgement of the bib fromthe flaps.
