GARMENT HANGER Filed Oct. 23, 1940 Inventor M/fiam $672 rd A Homey Patented July 15, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GARMENT HANGER William 0. Gerard, Waco, Tex. Application October 23, 1940, Serial No. 362,444
1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in garment hangers, and the primary object of the invention is to provide in a wire type of hanger, a trouser or skirt supporting bar of relatively wide supporting contour, and incorporated with the wire portion, so as to eliminate the displacement and destruction of the usual cardboard employed for the purpose.
Other important objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from a reading of the following description taken in connection with the appended drawing, wherein for purposes of illustration I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a general side elevational view.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the trouser or skirt bar.
Figure 8 is an enlarged transverse vertical sectional view taken along the line 33 of Figure 1 and looking toward the left in the direction of the arrow.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary enlarged longitudinal sectional view taken through one end portion of the hanger.
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary top plan view of an end portion of the trouser or skirt bar.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 5 designates the present hanger, which comprises wire shoulder portions 6 and I joined in a twisted formation 8 providing a shank for the hanging hook 9, substantially in accordance with present practice.
The outer ends of the shoulder portions 6 and I are modified as indicated in detail in Figure 4 to provide the longitudinally inwardly projecting horizontal portion l terminating in the perpendicular depending portion II which terminates in a longitudinally inwardly projecting horizontal portion l2 which engages the lower side of the web l3 of the trouser or skirt hanger bar which is generally designated I4. The inner end of the portion l2 of the wire extends upwardly as indicated by the numeral I through the hole l5 adjacent the end of the bar M where the wire is bent longitudinally outwardly and downwardly to lie along the top of the web l3, so as to securely lock this'end of the bar to the corresponding shoulder portion, so as to prevent removal or displacement of the bar from the remainder of the hanger.
The trouser or skirt supporting bar l4 comprises the elongated generally horizontal web I3 which is upwardly bowed as indicated in Figure 3 to provide a gently rounded supporting surface on which the trousers or skirt is immediately supported, the longitudinal edges of the web l3 terminating in gently rounded bends l1, 11', respectively, from which laterally inwardly extend declining flanges l9, l9, respectively, which substantially meet at the point indicated by the numeral 20 to provide a substantially triangular closed tube having elliptical end openings 2| and 22, respectively, which expose the wire receiving openings I5 at each end of the bar [4, as indicated in Figure 2 of the drawing. It will be observed that the rounded edges I6 and [1, together with the top of the web l3, provide a smooth series of surfaces for the support of the trousers or skirt whereby hanger-creasing of the garment is positively prevented. The bar I4 may be formed of metal or of other suitable material having adequate structural sufiiciency, although relatively thin metal is preferred.
Although I have shown and described herein a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be definitely understood that I do not wish to limit the application of the invention thereto, except as may be required by the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having described the invention, what I claim as new is:
A garment hanger comprising oppositely inclining wire shoulder portions joined at their inner ends to form hanger suspending means, inwardly projecting terminals on the outer ends of the shoulder portions spaced substantially apart, a horizontal hanger bar comprising a relatively fiat transversely rounded wide bar and having an opening adjacent each end thereof, said bar having depending laterally inwardly deflected flanges joined to the respective longitudinal edges of said bar by transversely curved portions to form a rounded inverted triangular cross sectional shaped tube supported by said terminals, each of said terminals comprising an inwardly projecting horizontal portion, a perpendicular portion depending from the horizontal portion, a longitudinally inwardly projecting horizontal portion extending from the perpendicular portion and engaging the lower side of the web of the hanger bar, the end of the last named portion extending upwardly'through a hole in the hanger bar and bent longitudinally outwardly and downwardly to lie along the top of said web to securely lock the bar to the shoulder portions.
WILLIAM C. GERARD.
