5 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in garment hangers for use more particularly for coats, trousers, skirts and gowns.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed, inexpensive hanger which is extensible to fit different sizes of coats so that the same may be hung thereon Without becoming wrinkled, and which is equipped for hanging trousers, dresses and other garments evenly, and for the hanging of evening gowns so that the same will not slip off.
Various other objects are also comprehended by my invention all of which, together with the precise nature of my improvements will be readily understood when the succeeding description is read with reference to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawings: i
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a pre ferred embodiment of my invention,
Figure 2 is a view in bottom plan,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in longitudinal section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2 and drawn to an enlarged scale,
Figure 4-. is a view in transverse section taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1 and drawn to an enlarged scale,
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view in bottom plan,
Figure 6 is a view in transverse section taken on the line 6-9 of Figure 1 and drawn to an enlarged scale,
Figure 7 is a view of a blank from extension members are formed, and
Figure 8 is a view in transverse section taken on the line 8-8 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, the illustrated embodiment of my invention comprises a hanger bar l having a central arch 2, curved, downturned ends 3, and intermediate, substantially straight portions 4 between said arch and ends sloping downwardly toward the latter. The usual suspension hook 5 extends upwardly and centrally from said arch 2. The bar I is suitably formed out of sheet metal in the cross sectional shape of half round tubing, the open side of the bar comprising the bottom thereof.
A pair of extension members 6 are provided for said bar I, each of which is also formed of sheet metal and in the cross-sectional shape of half round tubing and to fit over the ends 3, respectively, and the adjacent straight portions 4, said members otherwise conforming in shape to said ends and straight portions and being end-. Wise slidable on the bar 1 to extend the length of which the extending for a suitable distance inwardly past l0 the. edges of the bar and upturned as at 8'. As will be obvious, the tabs 1, 8, are designed to'slide along the edges of the substantially straight portions 4 of the bar I and the members 6 may be adjusted outwardly and inwardly ofthe bar, 7 into different set positions.
Means are provided for yieldingly retaining theextension members 6 in different set positions as follows:
A pair of U-clips f suitable, flat, resilient metal are provided to fit sidewise between the side edges of the bar I with the closed ends thereof resting on the extending ends of the pairs of tabs 8, respectively, and straddling the upturned ends 8' thereof, andwith their legs extending inwardly along the inside of the bar I. As will be readily understood, the tabs 8 and upturned ends 8 thereof anchor the clips 9 in fixed relation tothe extension members 6. The
, legs of the clips 9 are crimped to form a pair of opposed teeth Ill adjacent the free ends of the legs, of each clip, adapted under reaction of the legs outwardly to snap into apertures ll provided in the sides of the bar I in opposed pairs spaced longitudinally of the straight portions 4 of said bar. The teeth H) are wedge-shaped to be cammed out of the apertures ll 'under adjustment of the extension members 6 in either direction.
A pair of substantially semi-circular spring clips 12, each with a radial, central, headed stud l3 thereon are provided for attachment over the bar l intermediate the arch 2 and extension members 6 and which are adjustable'along'said bar, 1. The clips [2 may be formed of fiat spring steel and are provided for anchoring evening gown straps, not shown, thereon to suspend such gowns from the hanger.
A straight tie rail I4 is provided to extend between-the ends 3 of the bar I, said rail being formed of sheet tubing. The rail i4 is attached to the ends 3 of the bar I, by means of a pair of upwardly bent end flaps I5 on said rail spot welded to said bar I within the latter, the, spot welding not being shown. Said rail [4 is longitudinally split to form a slot l6 therein extending along its bottom and a pair of bottom openings I! at the ends of the rail to which said slot extends.
A clip E8 of fiat resilient spring steel is suspended centrally from the rail [4. The clip I8 is of inverted T-shape with a pair of opposed vertical side arms l9 and a pair of opposed hori zontal jaw members 20 on the lower ends of arms l9 having diverging ends; A pair of headed studs 2| slidably fitting in the slot I6 with the heads thereof resting on the edges of the slot suspend said clip Hi from the rail.
A pair of clips 22 also of flat spring steel are suspended on the rail !4 at opposite sides of the clip [8. Clips 22 each comprise a pair of side arms 23 converging downwardly into engagement adjacent the lower ends thereof and then flaring outwardly. A pair of studs 25 suspend each clip 22 from the rail I4 in the same manner as clip l8. As will be clear, the clips I8, 22 may be slid along the slot It to either opening I! and detached through said opening.
The rail l4 may be used to hang skirts, and trousers, .thereover, as well as other wearing apparel. The clips l8 and 22 may be used to clampingly engage said garments and suspend the same from the rail and may be relatively adjusted along said rail as occasion may requires The extension members 6 are preferably formed from a blank 25 of resilient steel of elongated rectangular form having a pair of opposed edge ears 26 intermediate its ends and a similar but longer pair of edge ears at one end thereof and which are designated 21. The manner in which the blank is formed into an extension member will be readily understood from the description of said members.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suifice to in1- part a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from. the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the subjoined claims.
