This invention relates to garment hangers.

The conventional triangular form of wire garment hanger is highly unsatisfactory for use as a hanger for dresses, particularly those provided with shoulder straps, inasmuch as the same readily slip off of the hanger. This result has been universally demonstrated without producing any satisfactory solution of the problem. In most instances, the ends of the wire garment hanger 11 have been deformed upwardly thus acting to prevent a dress hung thereon from sliding off. This however results in ruining the garment hanger for future use. In other instances, the shoulder straps supported on a conventional hanger have been pinned in place to prevent the dress from slipping off therefrom. This method not only involves the expenditure of a great amount of time but usually results in marring the garment. These and other expedients for 20. holding a dress in place on a hanger have been tried without proving materially successful.

To obviate the above set forth difiiculty, it is the principal object of this invention to provide a wire garment hanger which in external contour is of conventional shape and in which the inclined sides of the hanger are provided with reentrant portions which are adapted to receive the shoulder straps of a dress in such a manner as to prevent the dress from falling or sliding off of the hanger.

It is another object of this invention to so shape the reentrant portions of the garment hanger as to permit the use of the garment hanger with a collared dress, the collar of which 5 is adapted to fit within said reentrant portions in substantially interlocked relation with said garment hanger.

The above and other objects and advantages will be more fully apparent from the following description of the accompanying drawing.

The figure represents a front elevation of the garment hanger embodying my invention.

The garment hanger II] is formed of a single .5 strand of wire of sufficient gauge to make a substantially rigid structure by bending the wire into a substantially triangular frame, the ends of the wire being intertwisted with one terminal extended and shaped to define a hook I I above the twisted portion I2.

The shoulder bars I 3 are inclined as shown and are of equal length and are joined at their lower ends by the cross bar I4.

Each inclined support arm I3 is provided with a reentrant portion I5 constituting an integral part of the support arm, said reentrant portions I V I5 being of a hook shaped formation. Near the lower end of each support arm I3 is formed the opening I6 to said reentrant portion I5 which separates the support arm into a lower section I311 and an upper section I3b. The sides of the reentrant portion I5 comprise outer convergent portions I1, I'Ia, horizontal intermediate portions I8, Ifla and upper inclined portions I9, I9a, directed towards the hook I I and joined together by the curved portion 20. The intermediate portions I8, I8a, are horizontal and parallel to the cross bar I4, the lower intermediate portion IBa being of greater length than the upper intermediate portion I8. The lower outer portion I'Ia is rounded to provide a hump for a purpose to be hereinafter described. The upper outer portion I1 is inclined in such a manner as to provide with the lower outer portion I'Ia a wide opening I6. The inner inclined portions I9, ISa, are substantially parallel and extend upwardly with their terminus 20 at substantially two-thirds the distance of the support bar I3, and laterally at one-third the distance of the cross bar I4.

It will be apparent that the garment hanger isparticularly adaptable for use with shoulder strap dresses. Thus referring to the left side of the figure there is shown in dotted lines a shoulder strap 29 of a dress which is hung from the intermediate portion I8a of the reentrant portion I5, the same being readily slipped into position through the opening I6 in the manner readily apparent. When so hung, the shoulder straps 20 cannot fall or slide off of the garment hanger when the same is suspended by its hook II. Should the garment hanger on which the dress is hung be moved or inclined, the humps I'Ia will prevent the shoulder straps from sliding out of the reentrant portions.

This form of garment hanger is also susceptible for use with a sleeve dress provided with a collar. A portion of such a garment is shown in dotted lines hung on the right side of the hanger, the collar 2| being inserted in the reentrant portion I5 for engagement with the upwardly inclined portions I9a. The garment is thus hung in a more natural manner without any undue stretching of the collar.

The simplicity of my improved garment hanger enables the same to be manufactured at a very low cost and may be finished to present a neat appearance. It will be apparent that the reentrant portions I5 will in no way interfere with the conventional use of the garment hanger with mens coats, vests or trousers.

While a preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown, it is obvious that the same is susceptible to various changes and modifications in construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what is claimed is:

1. A garment hanger formed of wire bent into a triangular form and including a hook at its upper end, said form providing inclined shoulder supporting bars and a lower cross support bar, the wire forming the inclined shoulder bars being bent to provide reentrant open hook shaped portions arranged in opposed relation and in the plane of the triangular form, each hook shaped portion comprising an upper and lower section joined together at their innermost ends with the inner end portion of each hook shaped portion being inclined substantially in a direction towards the hanger hook and the outer ends of said upper and lower sections of each hook portion at their juncture with said shoulder bars defining an opening intermediate the ends of said shoul der supporting bars, whereby the shoulder straps of a garment may be inserted laterally through said shoulder bars into said reentrant hook shaped portions to be supported by an intermediate portion of said lowersections of each hook portion which are arranged parallel to said cross support bar.

2. A garment hanger formed of wire bent into a, triangular form and including a hook at its upper end, said form providing inclined shoulder supporting bars and a lower cross support'bar, the wire forming the inclined shoulder bars being bent to provide reentrant open hook shaped portions arranged in opposed relation and in the plane of the triangular form, the inner end portion of each hook shaped portion being inclined substantially in a direction towards the hanger hook and the outer ends thereof at their juncture with said shoulder bars defining an opening whereby the shoulder straps of a garment may be inserted laterally through said shoulder bars into said reentrant hook shaped portions to be supported thereby, said reentrant open hook shaped portions each comprising spaced upper and lower outer portions, spaced upper and lower intermediate horizontal portions with the lower of greater length than the upper and parallel to said cross support bar and spaced inner upwardly inclined portions, the latter being joined at their upper ends by a curved portion.

3. A garment hanger formed of wire bent into a triangular form and including a hook at its upper end, said form providing inclined shoulder supporting bars and a lower cross support bar, the wire forming the inclined shoulder bars being bent to provide reentrant open hook shaped portions arranged in opposed relation and in the plane of the triangular form, the inner end portion of each hook shaped portion being inclined substantially in a direction towards the hanger hook and the outer ends thereof at their juncture with said shoulder bars defining an opening whereby the shoulder straps of a garment may be inserted laterally through said shoulder bar-s into said reentrant hook shaped portions to be supported thereby, said reentrant open hook shaped portions each comprising spaced upper and lower outer portions, spaced upper and lower intermediate horizontal portions and spaced inner upwardly inclined portions, the latter being joined at their upper ends by a curved portion, said lower outer portions being rounded to define a hump and said intermediate horizontal portions being parallel to said cross bar and of greater length than said upper intermediate portions, the shoulder straps of said garment being supported by said lower inter-mediate portions and said hump functioning as a stop to prevent said shoulder straps from sliding out of said reentrant portions.
