Definitions
- This invention relates to compound scalebeams; and it consists in the combination, with the main beam, of a supplementary lower beam, fixed in an inclined position to present its face upward for convenience in reading, substantially as described.
- Figure 1 is a perspective of the compound beams of a weighingscale having my improved lower beam.
- Fig. 2 is a rear View of the (brass) beam-head, showing the insertion of the main steel beam therein.
- These two straps are then bent or curved out toward the front, and their extreme ends b b bent down at an angle and the beam A fastened thereto, presenting the face of the beam at a backward slant, so that the characters thereon receive the light even better than the other beams above it.
- This obviates stooping to read the figures, improves the looks of the scale, as all the beams stand out from and below the upper one and in a downwardly-slanting line.
- D E are the other beams, attached to the main beam B by the saddles c 0, as usual.

Description
J. H. USHER. Y
Scale-Beam. v
No. 224,494. Patented Feb.1 O,1880.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. USHER, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
SCALE- BEAM.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,494, dated February 10, 1880. Application filed September 24, 1878.
To all whom t't may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. USHER, of Bufi'alo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have made certain Improvements in (lompound Beams of Weighing-Scales, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to compound scalebeams; and it consists in the combination, with the main beam, of a supplementary lower beam, fixed in an inclined position to present its face upward for convenience in reading, substantially as described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of the compound beams of a weighingscale having my improved lower beam. Fig. 2 is a rear View of the (brass) beam-head, showing the insertion of the main steel beam therein.
I construct the lower beam, A, separate from the hangers, and substitute straps a a, first attaching the upper end of one strap a to the end of the main beam B, and the top of the other to the beam or the beam-head 0, both being riveted thereto or otherwise fastened. These two straps are then bent or curved out toward the front, and their extreme ends b b bent down at an angle and the beam A fastened thereto, presenting the face of the beam at a backward slant, so that the characters thereon receive the light even better than the other beams above it. This obviates stooping to read the figures, improves the looks of the scale, as all the beams stand out from and below the upper one and in a downwardly-slanting line.
D E are the other beams, attached to the main beam B by the saddles c 0, as usual.
I am. aware that scale-beams with fixed vertical unit-bars are not new; also, that scalebeams with unit-bars temporarily adjustable to an incline are not new. I do not claim either of such constructions.
What I do claim is In a compound scale-beam constructed and arranged substantially as shown, the lower bar, A, obliquely facing upward, as and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN H. USHER.
Witnesses:
J. B. DRAKE, T. H. PARSONS.
