UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOWELL MASON, OF ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE MASON & HAMLIN ORGAN COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
REED-ORGAN CASE. I
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,527, dated August 30, 1881,
Application filed May 6, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOWELL MASON, of Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reed-Organ Cases, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to the cases of reedorgansas, for instance, the cabinet and chapel cases, socalled; and it consists in the construction of the front, rear, and ends of such cases of slats, which are arranged side by side with an opening or space between them, and are fastened in such position to be capable of vibration, all so as to give a vent and escape to the sounds of the reeds and increase the resonant quality and action of the case when the instrument is played upon.
In the accompanying plate of drawings this invention is illustrated in connection with a reed-organ case known as the chapel-case, Figure lbeing a front elevation; Fig. 2, a rear elevation; Fig. 3, an end elevation; Fig. 4, a vertical section on line w m, Fig. 1; Fig. 5, a horizontal section on line y 3 Fig. 1.
In the drawings, Aand B represent respectively the front and rear sides of a chapel-organ case, and G and D the two ends thereof. These several parts-to wit, the frontand rear sides, A B, and the two ends 0 D-are made and formed in the usual manner, except that under this invention they are each made of a series of slats, (1, arranged side by side, pref- (No model.)
erably in vertical lines, and so as to leave an opening or space, 1), between them along their length, and in such position they are secured by screws (1 or other suitable fastening devices, or by gluing or otherwise to stationary rails E of the case, located as to the length of the slats so as to leave the slats free to \iibrate to the sounds of the reeds when the instrument is played upon.
By a construction of the case with slats having an opening between them, as above described, the sounds of the reeds are allowed a free and ready escape to the outside of the case, and a greatresonant quality and action is given thereto, all as is obvious withoutfnrther description.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
A case for reed-organs, composed of slats (1, arranged side by side with a space or opening, 1), between them, in combination with rails E, to which said slats are secured atcertain points of their length, so as to be capable of vibra tion, all substantially as and for the, purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOWELL MASON.
