UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN It. LOMAS, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO BERNARD SHONINGER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN REED-ORGAN SWELLS.
Speciication forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,282, dated July 29, 1873; application filed March 15, 1873.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN It. LOMAS, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Reed-Organs, of which the following is a specication:
The object of this invention is to make a clear and open passage for the escape of the sound'from the reeds through the case ofthe instrument; and it consists of a movable board or outside swell in the case, with a suitable connection with the ordinary swell, or the lever which operates it, to be opened by or with the said ordinary swell, and allow all the sound-waves a clear, open, straight passage through the case, whereby a large gain of power is obtained without any extra exertion on the part of the player, at any desired time giving nearly double the effect of the front reeds.
Figure lis a front elevation of part of an organ-case. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of Fig. l taken on the line :v x.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the ordinary swell of an organ, for softening the tones or producing expression. B is a lever, which is employed for working it by foot or by a stop.
By this plan I propose to arrange an outside swell or door, C, in the case, so that when it is desired to increase the expression free escape may be given to the sound-waves by opening it, together with the ordinary swell, by the lever by which the latter is operated.
D is an arm on the swell A, which is pushed against the outside swell C, and caused to open when the swell A is raised; but it is im material whether the swell C be connected in this way directly to a lever, B, or by any other equivalent device.
Heretofore open fret -work, covered with cloth, has been depended on for the escape ot the sound; but the imperfect, obstructed, and limited passages break the sound-waves, and materially lessen the effect of the reeds.
I propose to improve the organ in this respect by providing a wide, clear, open, and unobstructed passage.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. An outside swell, C, and an ordinary swell, A, combined to operate simultaneously, in the manner and for the purpose described.
2. The swell A, having piece D, the swell C, and the lever B, combined in the particular manner and for the purpose specified.
JOHN B. LOMAS.
Witnessed by- SIEGWAET SPIER, HENRY KoLBE.
