Description

s. B. SHONIN'GER.
' Reed-Organ Attachments. N0,]55,470, Patented Sept. 29,1874.
INVENTOR I I ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
SIMON B. SHONINGER, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN REED-ORGAN ATTACHMENTS.
Specification forming part of letters Patent No. 155,470, dated September 29, 1874; application tiled August 10, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON B. SI-IONINGER, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Celeste Attachment to Reed- Organs, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a celeste attachment to the octave-coupler of a reed-organ in such manner that the extra set of reeds heretofore employed is not necessary for such an. attachment, which largely lessens the expense; but a more important advantage is, it enables the mutes to be entirely open and give out the full power of the reeds. It can be used on either set of reeds in the organ at the will of the player, and it does not, when not in use, detract from the usefulness of the octavecoupler. I
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of aportion of a reed-organ with my improved celeste attaehment, taken on the line 00 00 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of Fig. 1, taken on the line y y.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
G is the handle on stop-draw of the ordinary octave-coupler mechanism, which is arranged, in this case, to couple below or to the left, instead of the right, in the usual way. A is a voiX-celeste stop-draw connecting with a cam-lever, B, which acts on the lever O, and, when drawn out, slightly raises the bar D of the octave-coupler, so that when the key E, for instance, is pressed down it will slightly open valve F of the octave below, giving the reed just enough air to sound, but not quite on the same pitch as when the coupler-stop Gr is drawn out. The coupler-bar D is divided so as to operate both sections when the lower section is used, but enabling the upper to be operated singly.
I do not limit myself to the particular mechanism shown, as that must necessarily be altered to suit the different styles of instruments; but,
Having thus described my invention, I claim. as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A voiX-celeste attachment for organs, consisting essentially of a stop-draw, A, and its connecting devices, in combination with the divided coupler-bar D, and the levers and valves connected therewith, the draw mechanism being arranged to but partially operate the latter, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
SIMON B. SHONINGER.
