' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
AUGUST WERNIOKE, OF'NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED WRlTING DESK .AND .WORK-BOX.
SPECIFICATION fOrm ing part of Letters Patent NO. 224,257, dated February 3, 1880.
' Application filed June 12, 1879.
To all tvhom it may 00mm; 7 i Be it known that I, AUGUST-WERNICKE, of the city, connty, and State of New York,
have invented a new and Improved'Oombined Writing-Desk and WorlrBox, which invention is fully setforth in the'following specification, reference being had 'to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical cross-section of my writing-desk and work-box when shut, the plane of section. being indicated by the line am, Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a similar section thereof when open, the plane of section being indicated by the line y y, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in a box having a hinged lid, a false bottom to such box having a less width or length than the space inclosed by the box-walls, so that-a space is left between one edge of said false bottom-and one of said walls, a partition rising from the false bottom at its terminus above the sides of the box, a flexible desk-leaf fitted into the well formed by the false bottom and partition, a guide-roller arranged in this well, and a stop acting on the desk-leaf, so organized that While the leaf may be shoved into the well mentioned, thereby laying bare the box and adapting the same to the uses of a work-box, it is capable of being pulled out so as to allow its outer end to rest on one side of the box, whereby it is brought to an inclined position convenient for writing.
In the drawings, the letter A designates the box, and B its lid, attached thereloby means of hinge-joints a. 0 is the false bottom of the box, and D the partition. E is the desk-leaf.
Thefalse bottom 0 is joined to the two ends wall of the box A, and in this example it terminates at such a distance from such wall as gular well, F, into which the desk-leafE is fitted. This desk-leaf E is constructed of a series of slats, 0, attached to a cloth or other similar back, d, so that'the leaf is flexible, the outer slat being wider than the remainder and being provided with a ledge, e. In this example theleaf E is made of less width than the length or width of the 'box'A, the object of this arrangement being to gain room for pen-racks f, one on each side of the leaf,
within the box.
In the vertical portion of the well F is arranged a roller, G, turning on a shaft, g, to guide the leaf E in its movements. A bevel, it, formed on the lower part of a standard, serving to support the compartment 1), also assists in guiding the leaf E.-
On its opposite edges, and near its inner end, theleaf E isprovided with apin, t, which,
together with a cross-piece, j, arranged at each end of the well F, form stops to regulate the outer position of the leaf.
When it is desired to, use the box A as a work-box the leaf E is ShO"6d into the well F, as shown-in Fig. 1, and when a writing-' desk is desired the leaf is drawn out, and its outer end permitted to rest on the front side of the box, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Inasmuch as the partition D is higher than the sides of the box, the leaf E is inclined when brought to the position last named, and hence it forms a very convenient writing-desk.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi i A combined desk and work-box consisting of a box having a hinged lid, a false bottom to such box which has a less width or length than the space inclosed by the box-walls, so that a space is left between one edge of said false bottom and one of said walls, a partition rising from the false bottom at its terminus leaf fitted into the well formed by the false bottom and partition, a guide-roller arranged in this well, and a stop acting on the deskleaf, the whole organized and adapted for use substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto setmy hand and seal this 1st day of March, 1879.
