Description

G. R. KELSEY. Suspender-Buckle.
No. 224,189. Patented Feb. 3,1880.
".PEIER5. PHOTQ-UTHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D, C,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFICE.
GEORGE R. KELSEY, OF WESTHAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
-SUSPENDER-BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,189, dated February 3, 1880. Application filed November 20, 1879. h
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEO. R. KELSEY, of West Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Suspender-Buckles and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in front of the buckle.
In the usual construction the Suspender passes between the plate and the lever, so that the lever lies next the person, which occasions unavoidable wear upon the garments. Again,
the lever is liable to catch in the garment and disengage the Suspender, so as to permit it to 1 slip through the lever and require readjustment.
The object of this invention is to overcome these difficulties; and it consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claim.
A represents the front plate or body of the buckle, which may be a plain plate 'or ornamented in any desirable manner. On each side of the plate an ear, a, is turned backward to form bearings. or support for the lever. B is the lever, cut from sheet metal, with projectin g points I) at each side corresponding to perforations d in the ears, and so as to be placed therein to form the hinge. The lever is turned at right angles toward the-plate A, to form the jaw e, in the usual manner, and so that when the strap or suspender C is placed between the plate and jaw, and the jawturnedthereou, as in Fig. 2, the buckle is secured to the suspender.
In the usual construction the end of the suspen'der passes down and outward between the plate and lever, producing the difficulties before referred to. Instead of doing this, I make a slot, D, through the lever B, through which the 'suspender is passed, thence downward in rear of the lever, which prevents any possibility of the end of the lever being-en gaged with the garment so as to accidentally disturb the lever or to wear upon the garment, the suspender-end itself serving as a means of holding the end of the lever against the plate.
The lower end of the plate Bis bent into the form of a hook, E, 'so that the ring or loop F of the braces may be engaged therewith, the suspender preventing accidental disengagmen t, but yet permittiu g the plate to be turned outward sufficiently to disengage the braces when occasion requires.
The arrangement of the hook upon the inside of the plate prevents not only accidental disengagement of the braces, but also so covers the hook as to prevent contact and wear of the outer garments.
I claim- 7 Thebuckle-plate A, combined with the lever B, hinged thereto, its upper end turned for ward toward the plate to form the Jaw e, and with a slot, (1, below, through which the suspender-end is passed, and a hook, E, on the lower end of the lever, so as to lie against the.
rear surface of the plate A, substantially as and for the purposes described.
GEO. R. KELSEY. Witnesses r J 0s. 0. EARLE, J. H. SHUMWAY.
