MORRIS F. BELL, OF FULTON, MISSOURI.
ADJUSTABLE RQCKING-C HAIR;
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Iietters Patent No. 224,130, dated February 3, 1880.
' Application filed May1,187 9. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that. I, MORRIS F.BELL, of Fulton, in the county of Gallaway and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable Rocking-Chair, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l isa side elevation of the chair. Fig. 2 is afront elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate'corresponding parts.
The invention consists of the hind legs, A A, of the chair, with lower ends mortised into the rockers B B, curved upward and forward so as to form the side supports for the seat, and these front ends of A A are supported by the front legs, O G. The side pieces, D D, of'the chair-back are pivoted at e to the downward-projecting lugs b of the legs A A, and are held in position by the arms E E, .whose rear ends are pivoted to them. p
The head-piece F connects the pieces D D at their tops. The rod G passes through the slots 01 and under the'chair-seat and through the front ends of the arms E E. This rod has a screw-thread out on one end, and on this,
7 outside of one of the arms, is the thumb-screw or hand-wheel H, which, being turned, will enable the operator to adjust the back of the chair at the desiredangle within the limits of the horizontal movement of the rod in the slots, and to secure it" there.
On the rod, between the arms and the bot:
tom side'supports, are loose sleevesf that receive the strain caused by tightening the hand-wheel and prevent the springing in- 5 ward of the arms. Y
The seat and'back of the chair are continuous, and composed of thin transverse strips I I, of wood or other suitable material, riveted on two or more longitudinal flexible bands, k k, 40
of metal or other suitable material. One end of these bands is secured to the head-piece F, while the other is fastened to the front piece, L, of the seat. Thus both back and seat are formed, that are flexible and will conform 5 themselves to the shape of the occupant. They may be covered with any suitable material or be left exposed, as shown.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat- 50 The combination, in a rocking-chair, with the rockers, seat, and front legs, of the hind legs, A, curved forward and resting on the front ones, the back pieces, D, connected by piece F, 5 5
and pivoted at a to lugs b of said legs, the
arms E, pivoted at their rear ends to back pieces, D, and the rod G, passing through as well as adjustable in slots 11, as shown and described.
