Description

(No Model.)
0. C. HARRIS.
CONVERTIBLE CHAIR. No. 375,934. Patented Jan. 3, 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
ORRIN O. HARRIS, OE NEWPORT, NEW YORK.
CONVERTIBLE CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,934, dated January 3, 1888.
Application filed August 16, 1887. Serial No. 247,081. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, ORRIN O. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newport, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in rocking-chairs provided with adjustable rollers and an adjustable foot-rest, and is more particularly an improvement upon Patent No. 355,819, granted to me January 11, 1887.
The particular construction and arrangement of the various parts of my said invention I will now proceed to point out and describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a chair embodying my invention, the rollers being shown adjusted so as to use the same as a roller chair; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation, the legs and rockers being shown in dotted lines, dotted lines also indicating the position of the rollers and foot-rest when the chair is to be used as a roekingchair.
Referring to said drawings, A represents a chair of ordinary construction having legs a and rockers a.
B B are brackets secured to the under side of the chairseat.
G- is a shaft mounted in hearings in the brackets B B and provided on oneend with a crank-handle, c.
D D are short lever-arms secured to the shaft 0.
E E are rods having their upper ends bent and pivotally secured to the ends of the leverarms D D. On the lower ends of the rods E E are mounted rollers F F. The rods E E are connected by braces e c. On the upper portion of the braces e 6, near the rods E E, are formed bearings c e.
So far as described, the construction of the chair is substantially the same as in my former patent, No. 355,819. The improvement on the arms G G by bolts h h, which are secured V in one of the bolt-holes in each rod. The rear portions oft-he rods H H rest in and are adapted to pass through the bearings e e. The arms G G are connected by braces K K.
L is a short leverarnl secured to the center of the shaft 0.
M is a bent rod pivotally secured at one end to the lever-arm L, and also pivotally secured at its other end to the center of the braces K K, connecting the arms G G.
0' is a stop on one of the legs, which limits the downward forward movement of the crankhandle.
To use the chair as a rocking-chair, the handle is turned back to the position shownin dotted lines. This turns the shaft 0 backward, and through the mechanism described raises the rollers above the rockers and draws the foot-rest under the chair.
To convert the chair into a roller chair, turn the crankhaudle forward until it engages with the stop 0', when the rollers will be moved below the rockers and the foot-rest be in position for use. By means of the bolt-holes in the rods earryiug the foot-rest,said foot-rest can be adjusted to the desired distance from the seat of the chair.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a convertible chair provided with rockers, the brackets B B, the shaft G, mounted in bearings in said brackets B B and provided with lever arms D D and L, the rods E E, pivotally secured to the lever-arms D D and provided with rollers F F, and braces e e,
having bearings e e, in combination with the I arranged, and operating substantially as rods H H, mounted in the bearings e e and shown and described. A [0 provided with the foot-rest I and bolt-holes h h, the pendent arms G G, pivotally secured to the rods H H by bolts h h and connected by braces K K, and the bent rod M, pivotally secured at one end to the braces K K and at its other end to the lever-arm L, all constructed,
In testimony whereof I afifix my signature in presence of two witnesses. ORRIN O. HARRIS.
