Description

J. PERNQUIST. Roking-Ghair.
No; 205,070. Patentedv June 18, 1878.
0 fge PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
JOHN FERNQUIST, OF OHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROCKING-CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,070, dated June 18, 1878; application filed I March 27, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN FERNQUIST, of Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton, and in the State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rockin g-Ohair Attachments 5 and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the use, with an ordinary rocking-chair, of an ad-y justable frame which moves to and fro upon wheels upon the oor when the chair is being rocked, to accommodate itself to its motion, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I willproceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification, Figure l is aperspective, and Fig. 2 a section, of a portion of the frame.
In the gures, A represents an ordinary rocking-chair, and B B its arms. C represents a skeleton frame, the forward end of which is provided with legs, which are supported upon wheels d d. D D are the two side arms of the frame, and which are made hollow at their rear ends. e e represent rods or bars, which are secured to the arms of the chair in any suitable manner at one end, their other ends passing into the hollow ends of the arms D D ofthe frame. These rods or bars are provided with notches or recesses, as seen at a a, into which one end of a springcatch catches for holding the rods in any desired position.
By pressing upon the innerend of the catch the other end is freed from the notch on the rod, and then said rod may be moved inward or outward in the arm to accommodate the frame O to persons of different lengths or heights.
A person using this chair places his feet upon the cross-piece connect-ing the two arms D D at their forward ends, and by pushing uponthe same tilts the chair backward. By easing up and moving his body slightly forward the chair tilts in the opposite direction, and thus a rocking motion is imparted, the wheels d. d moving backward and forward on the floor to accommodate the motion of the chair.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
- The chair A, having arms B, in combination with the detachable frame C, supported at its forward end upon wheels or rollers, and having adjustable arms D D connected to the chair by rods or bars e e, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of August, 1877.
JOHN FERNQUIST.
