JOHN HUSTON, OF TARENTUM, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOSEPH W. HUSTON, OF SAME PLACE.
CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,753, dated October 25, 1881. Application filed May 2, 1881. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN HUSTON, a citizen or" the United States, residing at Tarentum, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it apper- IO tains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification.
This invention has relation to improvements in chairs; and it consists in combining therewith a sliding frame of peculiar construct-ion, by means of which the chair can be raised from the floor and supported by said frame, in order to admit of the chair being moved from one place to another upon casters applied to the lower portion of said sliding frame; and it further consists in providing the same with suitable levers and eccentrics for operating the same, all of which will be hereinafter more fully explained.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved chair. Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a 0 longitudinal sectional View. Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-section. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views. a
The letter A designates a frame composed of side pieces, a a, which are connected to one another by rounds a a and placed beneath the seat B of the chair (J. Said frame is provided with projections Z) I) in front and rear of the chair 0. Said frame A has attached thereto, at the projections aforesaid, suitable caster wheels or rollers, I) I), for purposes hereinafter mentioned. The sides of the frame aforesaid are provided with plates a a that slide verticali y within guide-plates b b attached to the inner side of the chair-frame. Within the open- 4 5 ings c c, and on either side of the frame aforesaid, are eccentrics c c, that are rigidly secured to a rod, 0 that has its hearings in the bars 0 c of the chair-frame. Said eccentrics are provided with projecting pins b on their outer faces, to which are loosely pivoted the free ends of hand-levers D D, that have their rocking movements on the ends of the rod 0 Having thus given a description of the different parts of which myim provenient in chairs is composed, and the manner in which the same 5 is applied to chairs, I will now proceed and explain the manner in which it is operated.
Operation: Figs. 1 and 2 show the chair in a raised position. This position is attained simply by grasping the hand-levers D and giving them a backward movement, thereby turning the eccentrics which causes the frame A to slide downwardly on the vertical guideways until the casters or rollers touch the floor, thus raising the chair, allowing the same to rest on said rollers.
It will thus-be seen that I combine with any construction of chairs an adjustable frame, by means of which said chair can be easily moved from oneplace to another, and which also serves as a truck; at the same time it is durable, easily operated, and can be applied to any kind of chairs with but very little cost. And, again, it will be observed that when the levers hereinbefore mentioned are thrown forwardly the sliding frame aforesaid is caused to be. raised, thereby allowing the ch airto rest upon thefloor.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the chair-frame provided with guide-ways, the sliding frame provided with guide-plates and casters, the eccentrics, their supporting-rod, and the operatinglever, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN HUSTON.
