No. 182,690, filed December- 31, 1937, which has now become Patent No. 2,209,208, winding machines aredescribed for winding a group of cops, which automatically control the independent building of the cops, doiiing of the cops and donning of the tubes at every winding point. The means for automatically supplying the tubes enable the tube to be wound to be taken from a magazine outside the winding point, to be swung into winding position, orthe magazine to been positioned with respect .to the winding position that a tube is released therefrom from time to time and left in the winding position.
According to the present invention provision is made whereby short tubes (so called copstartlng tubes or cones) may be used. To this end 2ilbbearing a domng cup 2 I911, which embraces the spindle I. The cup 2I9a has the function of doiling the completed cop, in a manner to be de- 222 is slidably mounted at the foot of bearing 5 and has fixed on its outer end a other 223 by which itris carried to the right with the tail stock on its movement to the right under the drive of gear 226. To the left (Fi 1) of the tail stock post 22| there is fixed to shaft 222 a post scribed. The building of the cop is controlled by a cone I, called a bell cone, mounted below the spindle 4 upon an'inclined pin I. The pin I means are provided whereby after the'tube to be wound has been swung in from the preparatory position to thewindin'g position, with or without the magazinei'rom which it is supplied, it is also movable axially'in the winding position.
The invention will be described in .detail by reference to the accompanying drawings. whereprojects rigidly from the end of a pivoted lever composed of two arms I" and ill and a journal 2 which mounts it in the frame of the machine. The arm ill bears against a cam I40 iixed to the hub of gear 226, under the action of a spring 2a which urges the lever'in counterclockwise direction, as seen in Fig. 2. In the illustrative machine shown in the drawings, a spindle! is journailed in a bearing ,8, and a tall stock comprising a rotary socket 22! is journalled on a post 22L The post 2 is slidably mounted on a shaft 222 and is connected to a rack bar 225 engaging a gear 22'. The gear 22 is rotatably mounted upon a drive shaft 39 and can be coupled to said shaft from time to time as each cop is completed, by any suitable means, such as that shown iri ou aforesaid patent. The coupling means are not lustre-ted in the present application. The return movement of gear 226 may be caused by a weight, which is also not shown in the present application, but is shown in the said copending application. Movement of the-gear 228 under the drive of shaft 29 causes the rack bar 225 to travel to the right in Fig. 1, while its movement under the influence of the weight brings it back toward the left. The shaft suitable means, such as that disclosed in the aforesaid copending application.
The tubes ii are supplied to the spindle from a carrier '2 rockably mounted on the shaft. 222.
,The lower end of carrier 62 is forked to embrace a. long pin I fixed upon the end of an arm 62a rockably supported upon a stud 64. The hub of arm 32a has rigidly projecting downward from it an arm bearing by pin '5 against a cam 66, which is rigidly secured to the hub of gear 226. the embodiment shown the carrier 62 has fixed to its upper end a magazine I41 comprising two bars held together by braces Illa. to -arm a guide, engaging grooves at the base of cop tubes II. The bottom cop tube is restrained by a spring-influenced latch H8.
The device operates in the following manner:
The tube magazine I 41 is supplied with tubes by hand, or from any suitable device, such as a special tube clip, from which they can be stripped off-into the magazine I". Alternatively the tube magazine I" can be 'detachably mounted upon the carrier 82 so as to be supplied with tubes when dismounted and set in position on the carrler with its tubes in place. Assume that in the previous winding operation a cop has been fully wound, as shown in Fig. 3, and is ready to be doffed. As this time the magazine and carrier 82 stand at one side of the spindle. The growth of the cop has caused the tail stock 220, 22! to reach a position abutting against collar 223. At this instant the dofling is initiated preferably by an automatic mechanism, such as that shown in our said Patent No. 2,209,208, by coupling gear 226 to shaft 39, so that the rack bar 225 is driven to the right (Fig. 1). At the start of the movement of the gear 226 the cam H tilts lever I H, 3, to one side, to clear the way for the operation of dofilng cup 2|9a. As the rack bar 225 now moves outward, shaft 222, drawn by the hub of tail stock post 22l abutting against collar 223, is pulled to the right and dofling cup 2|9a engages the nose of the cop and pushes it off the spindle. The hub of carrier 62 is engaged by the hub of the post 2| 9b on which cup 219a is mounted, so that the carrier 62 moves to the right with the domng cup. It is therefore positioned beyond the end of spindle l at the close of the dofling operation. Cam 6 now comes into operation and rocks lever 62a, 63, clockwise (Fig. 2), thus rocking lever 62 counterclockwise and bringing the bottom tube I 0 into alignment with the spindle l. Shortly after, the gear and cam unit 226, 66. I", is uncoupled from shaft 39 and begins its return rotation under the influence of the weight (not shown). The resulting movement of rack bar 225 to the left brings the hub of post 22l into engagement with the hub of carrier 62 and pushes the empty cop tube l0 onto spindle 4. Thereupon earn 6 releases lever 62a, 53, which swings back counterclockwise under the influence of spring a and withdraws the carrier 62 from the spindle, the donned tube slipping out from the spring latch I and allowing the set of tubes in the magazine to drop. At about this time the bell cone I45 is rocked back into operative position and the winding, which has been interrupted by the uncoupling of spindle 4 from its driving means preferably by a clutch device such as that disclosed in our said Patent No. 2,209,208, is recommenced We claim:
1. In a cop winder, a spindle and a tail stock relatively movable in axial direction, a carrier adapted to hold an empty tube and pivoted to swing the tube from a position at one side of the axis of said spindle into a position coaxial therewith, said carrier being mounted so as to be also movable parallel to the axis of said spindle, and
a magazine positioned adjacent said carrier and adapted to feed empty tubes to said carrier in succession.
2. In a cop winder, a spindle and a tail stock relatively movable in axial direction, a carrier adapted to hold an empty tube and pivoted to swing the tube irom a position at one side of the axis of said spindle into a position coaxial therewith, said carrier being mounted so as to be also movable parallel to the axis of said spindle, and a magazine so connected with said carrier as to be movable therewith, said magazine being arranged to feed empty tubes to said carrier in succession.
3. In a cop winder, a spindle and a tail stock relatively movable in axial direction, a carrier adapted to hold an empty tube and pivoted to swing the tube from a position at one side of the axis of said spindle into a position coaxial therewith, said carrier being mounted so as to be also movable parallel to the axis of said spindle, means for swinging said carrier on its pivot comprising a slidable connection adapted to permit the movement of said carrier parallel to the axis of said spindle without disturbing the effectiveness of said connection for transmitting said swinging movement, and a magazine positioned adjacent said carrier and adapted to feed empty tubes to said carrier in succession.
4. In a cop winder, a spindle and a tail stock relatively movable in axial direction, a feeler cone mounted at one side of said spindle so as to bear against the nose of the cop to feed it axially, said cone being rockably mounted so that it can swing away from said spindle, a cup mounted coaxiaily with said spindle and movable to engage the nose of the cop when said cone is swung away, to push the cop off the spindle, a carrier adapted to hold an empty tube and pivoted to swing the tube from a. position at one side of the axis of said spindle into a position coaxial therewith, said carrier being mounted so as to be also movable parallel to the axis of said spindle, and a magazine positioned adjacent said carrier and adapted to feed empty tubes to said carrier in succession,
