Claims.
This invention relates to feeding'mechanisms for slicing machines and has particular reference to feeding mechanisms comprising an object holder of the trough type for supporting the ma- 5 terial Or object to be sliced.
The main object of the invention is to provide a simple mechanism adapted for converting at will a normally open object holder into one in which its supporting face or faces, with the sliceable object resting thereon, are covered, whereby to facilitate slicing operations of certain types'of material or objects which can not be effectively clamped or properly guided in object feeding arrangements heretofore in use.
A further object of this invention is to provide an object follower or pressing end member with said novel enclosure.
Comprehensively stated, the invention comprises a closure member temporarily attachable to an otherwise normally open object holder of a slicing machine and provided with an end member adapted for pressing the object or material for slicing against the rotary knife of the machine.
More specifically stated, the invention resides in a longitudinal cover having facilities for detachably mounting the same in a substantially immovable condition to an ordinarily open object holder of a slicing machine and providing this cover with an object follower or end member, slidably engaged on the cover, so as to facilitate the removal of both the cover and the follower from the machine when no longer required.
While one embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it is to be understood that this embodiment merely serves as an illustration of the underlying principles of the invention, so that they may be readily comprehended by those skilled in the art, and is not intended as limiting the invention to the specific form disclosed therein.
In said drawings- Fig. 1 shows a partly fragmentary side elevation of a slicing machine with attached cover and viewed from the right.

Fig. 3 illustrates an end elevation partly in section.
Fig. 4 shows a perspective view of the closure member with its attached object follower.
Fig. 5 is a side View of the object follower.
Continuing now by way of a more detailed description, an open sided object holder or chute A of the conventional V shape as used in slicing machines of the'non-clamping type, is mounted on a bracket B, formed with or secured to suitable guide sleeves' (not shown), so as to reciprocate in a well known manner relative to a rotary knife C.
A guide rod D is secured to and spaced from one edge of the chute A, adapted to guide an end holder E, of the type for instance, as disclosed in the patent of Peter Sivertsen, No. 2,058,519, dated October 2'7, 1936.
In the present invention the guide rod D is used for also securing .and clamping to same a closure member or cover F provided with a pair of brackets H and J, which may either be integral with or be Welded or riveted to the cover. Each bracket is bifurcated and thereby adapted for quickly attaching to or detaching cover F from the guide rod D. Bracket H has a set screw K adapted to secure the cover F in position on rod D.
Before the cover is mounted, the operator will swing the end holder E, indicated in dot and dash lines, to inoperative position as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The cover F, held to guide rod D, is of approximately the length of the chute A and shaped in a manner to suitably conform to the optimum conditions required for covering various sized materials and objects for slicing.
A preferable form of the cover, as shown, has two lengthwise portions L and M extend substantially parallel to the spaced off, opposingly located surfaces of the chute A, Fig. 3. Respective fiat and bent over extensions N and 0 thereof, forming both a slot-like space formation at their ends, are joined on their upper faces by 'a channeled connector strip P.
This arrangement provides therefore a groove Q with a T-shaped cross section, serving the purpose to suspend and guide an object follower R on the cover.
Each of the lengthwise portions L and M has a respective side end-portion S and T; bent at right angles for resting the latter on the inner surfaces of the chute A. A stop member U, shaped like a hook and forming a part of the portion S, serves the purpose to definitely locate cover F on the object holder A in a lengthwise direction as shown in. Fig. 3.
The object follower R comprises a plate having a contour conforming to that of the inner faces of cover F and chute A combined. At the upper end of and at a right angle to the plate extends a guide member V provided on its sides with grooves W, adapted to engage the edges of the extensions N and 0.
Suitable buttons X, of preferably non-scratching material, such as hard rubber and located on those edges of the follower which face the chute surfaces, serve the purpose to preferably support the follower R on the surfaces of chute A.
In order to prevent the follower R from touching the rotary knife of the machine, a limit stop Y, Fig. 4, is provided in form of a button or pin secured to the connector strip P.
Cover F is preferably provided with a, plurality of slots or openings Z, which permit observation of the movement of the material in the object holder or chute A, when the cover is in position.
It is claimed:
1. Detachable covering means for converting open sided object holders to closed sided object holders for slicing machines combining with a cover having a guideway, a follower, means for slidably suspending the follower in the guideway and means for securing the cover to the holder.
2. Detachable covering means for converting open sided object holders to closed sided object holders for slicing machines combining with a cover having a guideway, a follower slidably suspended in the guideway and means for securing the cover to the holder.
3. Detachable covering means for converting open sided object holders to closed sided object holders for slicing machines combining with\a cover, a. guideway, a follower slidably suspended in the guideway and means for securing the cover to the holder, the cover being reticulated.
4. Covering means for converting open sided object holders of slicing machines to closed sided object holders comprising a follower, a removable cover and means for slidably securing the follower to the cover for removal therewith. 5. A slicing machine combining a knife, an open sided object holder, covering means for converting the open sided object holder to a closed sided ob-ject holder, guided means for advancing materials to be slicing toward the knife, said guided means being located entirely within the interior limits of the object holder and covering means and being slidably carried thereby for removal therewith.
