Description

W. 0. LINCOLN. Lamp.
No. 221,078. I Patented Oct-28, 1879'.
m'bzesses UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
WILLIAM C. LINCOLN, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE BRIDGEPOR'I BRASS COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 221,078. dated October 28, 1879; application filed July 19, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM O. LINCOLN, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairtield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in the combination, in a lamp, of a base-piece, a supporting-rod extending from the center of it, ahorizontal cylindrical reservoir provided with a slide or socket extending transversely through its center fitting upon said supporting-rod, means forv securing the said reservoir in different vertical positions on the said rod, a burner arranged upon the reservoir at one side but in line with its slide or socket, and provided with a shade-holder and shade receiving within them the rod aforesaid, the whole being so organized that the reservoir and its appurtenances may be turned relatively to the rod without changing its balance, and hence without danger of tipping over.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of a lamp embodying my invenignates a horizontal cylindrical reservoir provided with a slide or socket, S, fitting on the rod B, and extending transversely through its central portion and somewhat below it, where it is provided with a clamping-screw, D, for securing it and the reservoir in different vertical positions.
- The reservoir, as represented, is furnished on one side of the slide'or socket S and rodB with a filling-mouth, E, fitted with a remova ble screwcap, and on the other side with a burner, G, which is in line with the slide or socket S, and supports a shade-holder, H, and shade I, within which the rod B extends.
A lamp having its reservoir thus centrally supported .over the center of its base-piece,
and the burner at one side of the supportingrod, so that the latter will be received within its shade-holder and shade, while it affords provision for concealing the supporting-rod, is susceptible of having its reservoir and appurtenances turned around said rod without entailing the danger of tipping the lamp over,
and hence is far superior in appearance and equal in convenience to the ordinary studentlamps.
I am aware that it is not new to provide the reservoir of a lamp with a slide or socket extending transversely through its center, and arranging a burner on it .at one side in line with the slide or socket, and combining said reservoir with a supporting-rod extending from the center of a base through the slide or socket of the reservoir.
I am also aware that it is not new to provide a reservoir with an external slideway on one side and support it by a supporting-rod extending eccentrically from a circular base-- piece up into a shade applied to the-burner of the lamp.
In the latter lamp the reservoir, and consequently the burner, could not be adjusted around the supporting-rod so as to shed light in any direction without endangering the tipping over of the whole lamp, and therefore is objectionable.
I-do not elaun either of the above constructions as of my invention.
What I have in view is to make a compact lamp having the above characteristics, and one wherein the supporting-rod extends up through the shade-holder into the shade of the lamp, the whole being so constructed that the reservoir and its appurtenances may be turned upon the supporting-rod without danger of tilting the lamp, which I regard as new and original with me.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in a lamp, of a base-piece, a supporting-rod extending from the center of it, a horizontal cylindrical reservoir provided with a slide or socket extending transversely through its center fitting upon said supporting-rod, means for securing the said reservoir in different vertical positions on the said rod,
a burner arranged on the reservoir at one side tions on the supporting-rod Without endangerhut inline with the slide or socket thereof and ing the tilting of the lamp, substantially as provided with a shade and shade-holder respecified.
ceiving within them the supporting-rod, the \VM. 0. LINCOLN. whole being so organized that the reservoir Vitnesses: and its appurtenances may be turned and ad L. M. SLADE,
j usted and secured in different vertical posi- \V. U. MARSH.
