Description

July 2,1940. T. B. McGlNNls v HAND SANDER Filed April l, 1939 vzsJvfs/wws, hm/d Patented July 2, 1940 HAND SANDER Thomas B. McGinnis, Big Spring, Tex. Application April 1, 1939, serial No. 265,565
5 Claims.
This invention relates to a device for sanding floors and other surfaces by hand. The purpose of this invention is to provide a. hand sander, the parts of which may be rigidly attached to each other.
Other objects of the invention will appear hereinafter throughout the specication.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hand sander embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the hand sander shown in Figure l showing portions of the latches and operating parts for the same in dotted lines.
Figure 3 is a section taken on the line 3 3 of the Figure 1 and:
Figure 4 is a section taken on the line lI- of Figure 2.
In the drawing the numeral I indicates the body of the hand sander which may be constructed of Wood or other suitable material. 'Ihe under side and a portion of the upper surfaces of the body may be provided with a suitable covering of felt or other Cushing material 2.
Preferably centrally located on the upper surface of the body is a raised inverted V portion 3, comprising oppositely sloping sides and 5. The sand paper is indicated by the numeral E. This sand paper may be furnished in the form of a belt as shown, so as to cover the entire outside body with the exception of the sides thereof, or a strip of sand paper may be used instead, the ends terminating along the sides of the V shaped portion. Normally in line beneath the sand paper when in place are a plurality of latches I and 8 which are pivoted at 3 and Iii respectively to one of the sloping portions 5. Fastened tothe base of the sloping side 5 by means of a nail or screw II is a leaf spring I2 having end portions I 3 and I4 which bear against the latches 1 and 8 respectively. These latches are provided with noses I5 and I5.
'Ihe numeral II indicates a guideway for the latches when they are pushed back in retracted position. The guideway is fastened in position by means of a screw or nail I8 to the sloping side 5, as indicated in Figure 3.
Removably mounted on the body as shown in the ngure is the top I9 constructed of metal and having side flanges 2D and 2I.
Rigidly mounted on the upper side of the top are handles 22 and 23. The sides 2i! and 2l each have elevated middle portions such as indicated at 24 and 25 in Figure 4, terminaating in edges 25 and 2'I respectively lying adjacent to the vertical sides of the V shaped portion of the body. The top I9 has inclined sides 28 and 29 in partially overlying the vsloping portions 4 and l5 of raised portion 5. Thev noses I5 and I6 of the latches 1 and 8 are adapted to be projected across these edges 26 and 27 by the end portions of the spring I2 as shown in the figures, to hold the top in rigid relationship with the body, and also to hold sand paperso as it will not slip on the felt covering 2.
It will be seen from the above description that I have provided a practical, cheaply constructed hand sander which adequately serves its purpose, in that it consists of a minimum of parts, rigidly held together by the latches to thereby maintain the p-arts in, Aproper relationship for use. The parts may be quickly dis-assembled by moving the latches inwardly on the slideway Il by pressure of the fingers to a position where the latch noses clear the edges 26 and 21, whereupon the top may be removed from the body. After removal of the top disposal of the used sand paper may be effected. A fresh piece of sand paper may then be positioned on the body and the top again placed thereon and held in position by the latches I and 8.
It is understood thatthe Aabove description is merely illustrative, and in no wise limited and that I desire to comprehend within my invention such modifications as may be embraced within the claims and the scope of my invention.
The term raised portion in the claims is to be understood as including all parts of the body of the sander wherever attached, located above the level of the top horizontal surface of the body.
'What I claim is:
1. In a hand sander, the combination of a. body having a raised portion, latch means on said raised portion, a top having handles mounted having a raised central portion extending trans versely of the body, a plurality of latches on said raised portion and movable transversely of said body, a top, said top having an edge extending longitudinally of said body, whereby when said top is placed on said body said latch means will engage said edge to prevent removal of said top 2v 1 fr.
10 top whereby the abrasive strip and top are securely held on said body.
4. In a hand sander, a body, a top for said body having side anges, said body adapted to support a strip of abrasive material surrounding said body, means for holding said top and said abrasive material in iixed position on said body comprising latch means on said body and the flanges on said top cooperating with said latch means, to hold the abrasive strip securely on said body and the top and body together.
5. In a hand sander, the combination of a.
body having a raised portiony latch means on said 5 raised portion, a top having an edge whereby when said top is placed on said body, said latch means will engage said edge to prevent removal of the said top and maintain a strip of abra.- sive material, when the same is placed on said body so as to surround the same and against said raised portion, said raised portion having at least one sloping side cooperating With said top for engaging said abrasive material, and clamp the same on said sloping side. 1|
