Application May 17, 1932, Serial No. 611,888 Renewed January 2, 1934 4 Claims.
The present invention relates to an apparatus for shielding writing boards or pads from the rain and has for its prime object to provide a device of this nature which is simple in its construc- 6 tion, easy to handle, readily attachable to and detachable from the board, inexpensive to manufacture, thoroughly efficient and reliable in use and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel combination of parts:

Figure 1 is a top plan View of the device embodying the features of my invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse section therethrough taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1.

Figure 5 is a longitudinal section taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a plan View of one side of the shield.
Figure 7 is a detail elevation showing the upper end of one of the strips on the side of the shield.
Referring to the drawings in detail it will be seen that numeral 5 denotes a board with the usual clip 6 on the upper end portion thereof for holding a tablet or the like.
On the bottom side of the board 5 are mounted a pair of channel strips 7. Each strip is bent over upon itself so as to be substantially U-shaped in cross section with one side longer than the other, the longer side being fastened to the board by suitable means 8. These channel strips open outwardly.
Numeral 9 denotes a sheet of transparent flexible material in the side edges of which are strips 10 bent over upon themselves to receive the edges of the sheet 9 being fixed thereto by suitable fastening means 11. The upper ends are curved to form eyelets or handles 12. A flexible sheet of waterproof material 14 is fastened to the upper edge of the sheet 9. The strips 10 are adapted to be slid into the channel members 7 and the sheet 14 is swung over top of the board as indicated to advantage in Figures 1 and 5 to form a top covering. Thus it will be seen that the hand may be placed inside the shield to write on the tablet on the board and the tablet will be protected from the rain, snow or the like. When the shield is not in use it may be easily removed from the board and rolled up in a compact bundle. The upper and lower edges of the shield sheet 9 are inserted in the grooves in the reinforcing flexible strips 15 and 16. As clearly indicated in Fig. 5, the upper edge of the sheet 14 is bent as indicated and inserted in the upper strip 15.
It is thought that the construction, utility and advantages of this invention will now be clearly understood by those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof.
The present embodiment of the invention has been described in considerable detail merely for the purposes of exemplification since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and th above description.
It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. In combination, a board having channel strips fastened to the bottom face thereof along its side edges, a sheet of transparent flexible material having strips on the side edges thereof for slidable engagement with the first mentioned strips.
2. In combination, a board having channel strips fastened to the bottom face thereof along its side edges, a sheet of transparent flexible material having strips on the side edges thereof for slidable engagement with the first mentioned strips, a sheet of flexible waterproof material fastened to the upper end of the transparent sheet so that the same may be swung over the top of the board.
3. In combination, a board having channel strips fastened to the bottom face thereof along its side edges, a sheet of transparent flexible material having strips on the side edges thereof for slidable engagement with the first mentioned strips, a sheet of flexible waterproof material fastened to the upper end of the transparent sheet so that the same may be swung over the top of the board, the channel strip being substantially U-shaped in cross section with one side longer than the other, the longer side being fastened to the board.
4. In combination, a board having channel strips fastened to the bottom face thereof along its side edges, a sheet of transparent flexible material having strips on the side edges thereof for slidable engagement with the first mentioned strips, a sheet of flexible waterproof material fastened to the upper end of the transparent sheet so that the same may be swung over the top of the board, the channel strip being substantially U-shaped in cross section with one side longer than the other, the longer side being fastened to the board, the strips on the transparent sheet extending above the upper edge thereof and terminating in handles.
