MARION P. WOLFE, OF GRAWFORDSVILLE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOK-CASES.
Q Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 220,265, dated October 7, 1879; application filed March 14, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be ft known that I, MARION P. WOLFE, of Orawfordsville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book or Record Cases; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved book or record case, and Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the same.
The same part in the two figures is denoted by the same letter.
The object of this invention is to provide means to hold heavy record-books and other tomes, which will lessen the labor and impairing of the books while handling them, and admit of their removal and replacement, so as to prevent Wear and chafing of the books and the breaking away of the leaves from each other and the cover 5 and to these ends it consists of a bracket provided with a series of rolls hung in a box, having a right-angled plate united thereto by a web, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, A refers to a suitable case for inclosingor receiving books. Fastened to the bottom of the case, and arranged about midway of its bottom and top, within the case, are boxes I), supplied with anti-friction rolls B, which provide restingsurfaces for the book or volumes. The boxes, arranged above the bottom and next to sides of case, are extended laterally, with said lateral extensions provided with upright side pieces, N, to form brackets to secure them, without other means of support, to the sides of the case. To strengthen the brackets, webs b are used to connect them to the sides of the boxes, as clearly shown in the drawings. These boxes, with their rolls, may be duplicated when the books or volumes may not be of sufficient width or length to reach from and rest on the side series of rolls.
Wear, chafing, and other destructive effects to the books, besides the labor, 850., are greatly reduced by my improvements.
As a rule, I place the books in the case directly upon the rollers but, if desired, a supplemental shelf, 0, may be employed, itself resting upon the rollers.
Gross-pieces or shelves 0 are used when, to prevent sagging, more than two sets of rolls are required above the lower shelf or bottom of the case. The cross-pieces may be attached either to the sides of the case or to the end frames or brackets which are so secured.
By sliding the books upon their sides into the case and upon the rollers, all the advantages hereinbefore referred to as to the saving of the books and lessening the labor in handling them are obtained.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a bracket for book and other cases, having a series of rolls, B, hung in a box, b, having a right-angled plate, b, united thereto by a web, W, as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
