ILPETERS. PHDTO-LITHOGRAPNER. WASRlNGYDN, D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ISAAC H. MAMBERT, OF TROY, NEWV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 219,284, dated September 2, 1879; applic. tion filed July 2, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAG H. MAMBERT, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirts, of which the bosom by holding it in a flat position during the operation.
To this end my invention consists in providing the shirt with a curved brace, extending from beneath the arms downwardly t0 the center of the front of the shirt, which, when the shirt is starched and ironed, will possess sufficient rigidity to prevent the wrinkling of the bosom and adjacent parts of the front of the shirt.
In the drawings, Figure 1 indicates a front view of my improved shirt; Fig. 2, a sectional view of the upper and lower parts and the band or brace; Figs. 3 and 4, similar section of modifications.
In carrying out the invention, the front of the shirt A is preferably formed of two parts, B O, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the lower edge of the upper part being cut on a curve, D, extending from that portion which sets under the armpits in a finished shirt to the center of the front of the shirt, and the upper edge of the lower part out on a corresponding reverse curve, E, the two edges being afterward placed together and united by stitching, in such manner as to form a curved band or brace, G, of thickened material, which will extend from beneath the armpits to the center of the front of the shirt, as shown.
In uniting the curved edges of the upper and lower portions of the shirt, it is preferable to fell the edges together, by which the material is thickened or doubled at the juncture of the two parts, adding strength to the brace and increasing its capacity to hold starch, and thereby be rendered more rigid when the shirt is starched and ironed.
Instead of forming the shirt-front in two parts, as above described, the shirt-front may be cut as usual, and the part B applied in proper position over the upper part of the front of the shirt and stitched thereto, the brace in this case being formed by turning under the curved edge D and sewing it to the shirt-front.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3 the lower edge, D, of the part B has folded over and stitched to it an independent band of fabric of suitable width, and the edge thus bound is stitched-to the curved edge E of the lower part, 0, of the shirt-front, said band forming the curved brace in the finished shirt.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the brace is formed of an independent band of folded fabric, which is stitched on a proper curve directly upon the ordinary front of the shirt by a double row of stitches.
As thus constructed, it will be evident that by reason of the extra thickness of the curved band and the increased amount of starch that it will receive and hold, it will possessa considerable degree of rigidity, so as to support the bosom and hold it in a comfortable and proper position upon the person, and prevent the wrinkling of said bosom and thcadjoining portions of the shirt-front when worn, and will also hold the bosom in a flat and convenient position while being ironed, thus facilitating the operation.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is l. A shirtprovided with a narrow curved brace extending from a point at or near the armpits of its front downward toward the center, whereby the bosom is held in position upon the person and prevented from wrinkling, substantially as specified.
2. A shirt-front constructed of an upper and a lower part, with curved adjoining edges, secured together by stitchiu g, whereby a narrow curved brace extending from or near the armpits downward across the front of the shirt is formed, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
ISAAC H. MAMBERT.
Witnesses JAMES L. NORRIS, JAMEs A. RUTHERFORD.
