This invention relates to collars, and has for one of its objects the provision a collar of the soft or semi-stiff type which may be either attached to a shirt or be separate from a shirt and detachably secured thereto.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a detachable collar construction which may be turned over so that the front and back portions of the collar will be alternately available for use on the shirt after one portion has become soiled.

Another object of the invention is to provide a separate detachable collar for a shirt which is so arranged that it may be attached to a shirt having a permanently attached collar and worn in place over the same either before or after soiling of the regular collar.

Another object of the invention is the securing of the detachable collar of the above type to a shirt by fastening means which will be concealed from view interiorly of the collar structure.

Another object of the invention is to provide a separate collar which may be fitted over a permanently attached collar on a shirt and held in place by buttoning on the shirt to which it is to be attached.

Another object of the invention is to provide a collar which is unlined and arranged to accommodate within its structure a collar which is permanently attached to a shirt.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

At the present time, the majority of the shirts for sale in mens furnishing stores ordinarily have a collar which is permanently attached to the neck portion of the shirt. Itis a well known fact that such attached collars rapidly become frayed and worn out sooner than the rest of the shirt so that the personal item involving the replacement of shirts is costly and involves a considerable annual expense to a man; and in order to overcome such difiiculties I have provided a separate collar adapted to be worn over the regular permanently attached collar on a shirt, and this detachable .collar may be worn in place over the regular collar either when the same is new or after it has become frayed; and in order to extend the period of useful life of such a separate collar I have provided a collar construction which is of a reversible character in which both sides may be used alternately in turn after one side has become soiled; and in order to obtain these advantageous results I provide this improved collar with an envelope-like construction in which the front and back portions thereof are secured together only at marginal portions of three of its edges, and for the attachment of such a collar structure to a shirt there is provided an extension piece on each of the unsecured edges to form a neck band engaging portion which is foldable inwardly within the interior of the collar and carried by these extensions are fastening means adapted to mutually co-act with each other and with other fastening means carried by the neck band portion of a shirt and the following is a more detailed description of the present embodiment of this invention, illustrating the preferred means by which these advantageous results may be accomplished:

With referenceto Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings, Hi generally designates a collar structure constructed in accordance with the present invention comprising a front portion l I, a back portion l2, both portions being of similar shape with the usual pointed ends and formed of suitable pieces of fabric material of the type commonly employed for making soft and semi-stiff collars.

The portions II and I2 are shown as being arranged in superposed relation in which position they are sewed together at three of their marginal edges only by sewing I3 which passes through suitably hemmed portions bounding the edges as shown in Fig. 2, to form a unitary collar structure. As illustrated in Fig. 2, the sewing I3 at the two end edges of the collar extends only partially across the collar terminating as at I5 to provide the loose sections I6 and I1 respectively of the portions II and I2 for attachment to the neck band of a shirt as will be presently described.

Formed integral with the free edge of each of the portions II and I2 are the flap extensions I8 and I9 which are foldable inwardly of the mouth of the hollow collar structure along the fold lines 20 and 2| respectively extending longitudinally of the collar so as to form a pair of opposed neck pieces, each carrying suitable fastening means, such as buttons or snap fasteners, for attaching the separate collar ID to the neck band of a shirt.

In the illustrated embodiment shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, I have provided a row of buttons 23 on one of the extensions which is adapted to coact with a row of buttonholes 24 formed near the top portion of the neck band 21 of the shirt adjacent to the collar and also with a row of buttonholes 25 formed in the opposite extension I8 when brought into registry therewith so that when the regular collar 26 of the shirt is inserted within the envelope-like structure of the separate collar I0, the latter may be buttoned on to the buttonholes 24 of the shirt and also to the series of buttonholes 25 in the opposite flap extension I8 of the separate collar thus detachably securing the collar in a proper position on the shirt for use thereon over the regular attached collar.

In Fig. 5 is shown a slightly modified arrangement in which the flaps I8 and I9 of the collar structure illustrated in Fig. 2 have been out 01f by severing along the longitudinal'fold lines 20 and 2| thereof leaving the loose portions I6 and I1 remaining for permanent attachment to the neck band 21 of a shirt.

In Figs. 6 to 8 are shown another modified arrangement in which 30 generally designates the separate collar structure having the inwardly foldable neck band extension pieces 3! and 32 similarly corresponding to the extension flaps l8 and I9 of previously described collar structure shown in Fig. 2. The regular permanently attached collar 33 is indicated by the dot and dash lines in Fig. 7 and is cut off from the neck band 35 of the shirt after becoming frayed, the cutting off of the collar 33 portion being carried out by severing it along the full line 36 so as to leave a short tab or stub portion 31 of the original collar fixed to the neck band 35 of the shirt whereby the separate collar 30 may be permanently afiixed to this tab 31 by suitable sewing 38, ind cated by the dotted lines, to provide a new collar on the shirt as shown in Fig. 8 and thus increase the useful life of the shirt.

The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A collar of the detachable type comprising front and back portions superposed on each other and joined together at three of its marginal edges only to form an envelope-like body structure open at one edge and of a size adapted to receive and accommodate within its interior the regular permanently attached collar of a shirt to which the detachable collar is to be applied, means at opposite sides of the open end of said envelope-like body adapted to overlie the usual neck band of the shirt when the permanent collar thereof is disposed within the detachable collar, and fastening means for securing said detachable collar to the shirt during the encased relation of said collars.

2. A collar of the detachable type comprising front and back portions superposed on each other and joined together at three of its marginal edges only to form an envelope-like body structure open at one edge and of a size adapted to receive and accommodate within its interior the regular permanently attached collar of a shirt to which the detachable collar is to be applied, longitudinally extending flaps at opposite sides of the open end of said envelope-like body adapted to overlie the usual neck band of the shirt when the permanent collar thereof is disposed within the detachable collar, and fastening means carried by said flaps for securing said detachable collar to the shirt during the encased relation of said collars.

3. A collar of the detachable type comprising front and back portions superposed on each other and joined together at three of its marginal edges only to form an envelope-like body structure open at one edge and of a size adapted to receive and accommodate within its interior the regular permanently attached collar of a shirt to which the detachable collar is to be applied, means at opposite sides of the open end of said envelope-like body adapted to overlie the usual neck band of the shirt when the permanent collar thereof is disposed Within the detachable collar, and fastening means adapted to co-act with other fastening means on the neck portion of the shirt to which the separate collar is to be applied for detachably holding the separate collar in place on the shirt when fitted over the regular permanent collar.

4. A collar of the detachable type comprising front and back portions superposed on each other and joined together at three of its marginal edges only to form an envelope-like body structure open at one edge and of a size adapted to receive and accommodate within its interior the regular permanently attached collar of a shirt to which the detachable collar is to be applied, longitudinally extending flaps at opposite sides of the open end of said envelope-like body structure adapted to embrace the usual neck band of the shirt when the permanent collar thereof is disposed within the detachable collar, and fastening means on one of the flaps adapted to have interfitting engagement with means carried by the neck band portion of the shirt to which the separable collar is to be applied, and also to have interfitting connection with means carried by the other flap for securing the separate collar to the shirt during encasement of said collars.

5. A collar of the detachable type comprising front and back portions superposed on each other and joined together at three of its marginal edges only to form an envelope-like body structure open at one edge and of a size adapted to receive and accommodate within its interior the regular permanently attachedcollar of a shirt to which the detachable collar is to be applied, longitudinally extending flaps at opposite sides of the open end of said envelope-like body structure adapted to embrace the usual neck band of the shirt when the permanent collar thereof is disposed within the detachable collar, and a row of buttons on one of the flaps adapted to have interfitting engagement with a row of slots carried by the neck band portion of the shirt to which the separable collar is to be applied, and also to have interfitting connection with a row of slots carried.
