The invention relates to garment cuffs, and more particularly to shirt cuffs, which may be adjusted to give the desired overall sleeve length.

In the merchandising of shirts, it has been necessary for the dealer to carry in stock shirts of the same color or design with a number of different sleeve lengths for any one neck size. As a result, the dealer frequently finds that he has on hand a stock of shirts with unusual and unsalable sleeve lengths, and he is compelled to sell such shirts at a great loss.

wearers of shirts also are frequently inconvenienced by shrinkage of the shirt sleeves, so that, while initially the sleeves may be of proper length, after a few washings of the shirt the sleeves become too short for comfort or for maintaining a well groomed appearance. No satisfactory provision has heretofore been made for adjusting the effective length of the sleeves of shirts in a quick and convenient manner.

Attempts have been made to provide changeable cuffs, but as constructed no adequate means has heretofore been contemplated for shielding or covering the folded portions thereof. The folded portions not in effective position interfere with the comfort of the wearer and introduce difficulties when the wearer dresses in the shirt.

The principal object of the present invention is to overcome the foregoing difliculties and. provide a sleeve construction which is adjustable in length and which includes a novel shirt cuff assembly which is simple in its details, yet capable of a plurality of adjustments for different lengths.

Other objects of the invention will appear from the specification and claims.

The nature and characteristic features of the invention will be more readily understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevational View of a preferred form of the invention, with a portion of the pocket or internal cover folded back;

Fig. 2 is a. View similar to Fig. ,1, showing the cuff extended to its greatest length;

Fig. 3 is a vertical central section through a portion of the cuif, illustrating one manner of folding the component parts and showing a short length position of the cuff;

Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, illustrating a different manner of folding the component parts and showing an intermediate length position of the cuff;

Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3, illustrating a still different manner of folding the component parts and showing an extended position of the cuff; and

Fig. 6' is an elevational view showing the cuff spread out.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, II] is a fragmentary portion of a sleeve with the subject matter of the present invention applied thereto. The end portion of the tubular sleeve 1 l] is divided in the customary manner to provide sufficient space for the passage of the hand of the wearer.

Bordering on each edge of the divided part is a length adjusting means which includes a reinforced strip II. This strip H extends outwardly and has a slit l2 therethrough, and a buttonhole i3 therein. Spaced buttons l4 and I5 are attached to the slit portion of the sleeve ID from which the strip ll extends.

Extending inwardly is a reinforced tongue IE, which is adapted to pass through the slit l2, and which has a buttonhole l'i therein. Spaced buttons l8 and I9 are attached to the slit portion of the sleeve [0 from which the tongue It extends. Either of the buttons IE3 or [9 may be placed in the buttonhole l3, with the corresponding button l5 or M in the buttonhole IT, to vary the overall length of the sleeve in accordance with the selection of a corresponding pair of buttons, l5 and I8, or M and IS.

A main cuff member 2i} is joined to the end of (3 the sleeve portion W by a line of stitches 2|, and comprises preferably two or more pieces of textile fabric, generally rectangular in shape. If desired, the main cuff portion may be stiffened, as by the interposition of a sheet of stiffening material between the facing sheets, or in any other manner known in the art. The end edge 22 of the main cuff member may be finished with a line of stitches.

A pocket is formed at the inner face of the main cuff member 20 by the provision of an apron or internal cover 24, of textile material, which is preferably joined to the sleeve Ill and to the main cuff member 20 by the line of stitches 29. The apron or internal cover 24 may be attached by a separate line of stitches if desired. The side edges of the cover 25 are preferably secured to the main cuff member by lines of stitches 25 which finish the respective edges of the main cuff member 2!], although if desired a separate line of stitches may be used for securing the edges of the cover 24.

The outer edge of the internal cover member 24 has buttonholes 26 therein, which are adapted to engage the small buttons 27 near the edge 22, on the inner face of the main cuff member 20.

Adjacent one side edge of the main cuff member 29, and extending therethrough, a buttonhole 28 is provided, and adjacent the other side edge a button 29 is secured to said cuff member 26.

A wing or auxiliary cuff portion 38, generally trapezoidal in shape, is provided, and is secured by a line of stitches 3! to the inside face of the main cuff member 2% in such manner as to provide a hinged connection therebetween.

The cuff member 30 may comprise two or more thicknesses of textile fabric, withor without internal stiffening material, and has a buttonhole 32 adjacent the edge corresponding to the adjacent edge of the main cuff portion 20. The buttonhole 32 is so located that when the wing 3i! is folded inwardly, as in Figs. 1 and 3, the buttonhole 32 is in alinement with the buttonhole 28 of the main cuff portion 29. A button is secured to the cuff member 3!] as at 33, for engagement in the buttonhole 32. When this wing 30 is placed in the folded position, it is completely enclosed between the main cuif member 29 and the cover 24, but it may be extended, as shown in Fig. 4, in accordance with the desire of the user.

A second wing or auxiliary cufi member 34, also generally trapezoidal in shape, and somewhat smaller than the member 3E3, may be provided, and is secured by a line'of stitches 35 to the inside face of the wing so as to provide a hinged connection between the first auxiliary member 39 and the second auxiliary member 34.

The second wing portion 34 may comprise two or more thicknesses of textile fabric, with or without internal stiffening material. This cuff portion 34 has a buttonhole 36 adjacent one edge,

so located that when the wing 34 is folded inwardly, as in Fig. 3, the buttonhole 36 is in alinement with the buttonhole 32 of the auxiliary cuff portion 30.

In the short length position of the cuff construction, the second wing 34, together with the first wing 36, will be folded between the main cufi member 20 and the cover 24 (see Fig. 3), and in the 7 intermediate length position the greater portion of the secondwing 34 will extend inwardly between the main cuff member 26 and the cover 24 (see Fig. 4)

The manner of use of the invention may now be summarized. If a short length is desired, the wings 3i! and 34 are folded inwardly between the main cuff portion 20 and the internal cover 24, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3, and the button 29 placed in the buttonhole 28. The wings are prevented from causing any difficulty because of their enclosure in the pocket provided between the main cuff member Zil and the internal cover 24.

If an intermediate sleeve length isrdesired, the wing 30 is moved outwardly, and the second wing 34 is caused to remain in the pocket, as illustrated in Fig. l. The button 2Q may then be placed in the buttonhole 28, and the button 33 in the

32, 36, extending through the wings 353 and 34, thus holding the structure in the intermediate position.

If a still greater length is desired, the second wing 34 may be unfolded outwardly, as illustrated in Figs. and 6. At the same time, if desired, further and additional adjustments may be effected by changing the relative positions of the strip H and tongue l6, and buttoning these two members in the selected position.

I claim:

1. In combination with a garment sleeve having a portion slitted near its end, a main cuff 5 member secured to the end of said P tion, a cover member within said main cuff member and secured thereto to provide a pocket between said members, an auxiliary cuff member of generally trapezoidal shape hingedly secured to said main l0 cuff member and adapted to be received within said pocket, another auxiliary cuff member of generally trapezoidal shape hingedly secured to said main cuff member and also adapted to be received within said pocket, each of said cuff members being provided with a finished edge so constructed and arranged that one of said edges as desired may be positioned as the effective end auxiliary cuff member being received in said I pocket when the same is folded;

3. In combination with a garment sleeve having a portion slitted near its end, a main cuff portion secured to the end of said slitted portion, said main cuff portion having a cuff edge, a 35 cover member within said main cuff portion and. extending to said cuff edge, said cover member being secured to one of said portions to provide a pocket, an auxiliary cuif member hingedly secured to said main cuff member and having a portion adapted to extend beyond the edge of said main cuff member, said auxiliary cuff portion being received in said pocket when the same is folded.

4. In combination with a garment sleeve hav- 5 ing a portion slitted near its end, a main cuff member secured thereto, an internal cover member secured to said main cuff member and extending to the edge of said main cover member, said cover member and said main cufi member providing therebetween a pocket, an auxiliary cuff member hingedly secured to said main cuif member and having a portion adapted to extend beyond the edge of said main cuff member, said portion being received in said pocket when the auxiliary cuff member is folded, and an auxiliary cuff member hingedly secured to said first mentioned auxiliary cuif member, and having a portion adapted to extend beyond the edge of said first mentioned auxiliary cuff member, said latter portion being received in said pocket when the said member is folded.

5. In combination with a garment sleeve having a portion slitted near its end, a main cuff portion secured to the end of said slitted portion, 5' a cover'member secured within said main cuff portion to one of said portions to provide a pocket between said cover member and said main cufi portion, and an auxiliary cuff member hingedly secured to said main cuff member and adapted to m be received within said pocket.
