Description

Patented May 3, 1938 i Y PATENT OFFiCE GARMENT Robert Alston Harris and Henrietta Harris, St. Louis, M0.
Application September 16, 1935, Serial No. 40,674
3 Claims.` (Cl. 2'7Q) This invention relates to garments; and has special reference to a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein disclosed whereby a satisfactory garment is produced and secured on the wearer in a novel manner.
Objects ofthe invention are to provide a garment including a body portion and legs having the body portion open from the collar or neckband downwardly in continuation of an opening extending upwardly from the lower portion of one of the legs, and fasteners for attaching together the marginal edges of the garment at said opening in, an ornamental and satisfactory fashion; to provide cuff elements in connection with the legs of the garment for fitting snugly around the ankles of the wearer; and, generally, to provide a garment of the character herein disclosed that may be manufactured and sold at permissible cost and which is highly attractive and pleasing in appearance and design.
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent from the following description, reference being made to the annexed drawing, in whichv Fig. 1 is a front perspective view of a garment construction in accordance with one embodiment of the invention, a portion of the legs being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the garment open.
Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic sectional View on the line 3-3 of Fig. l, showing the arrangement of the substantially concealed fastenersfor attaching together the marginal portions of the garment at the sides of the opening.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. l, showing other fasteners for the upper portion of the garment.
The garment shown on sheet I of the drawing comprises a body portion I having attached there- Yto sleeves 2 and 3, and a short skirt portion 4, so that said body portion including these portions may be called a coat. For additional utility and ornamentation, the front of the coat may be provided with lapels 5, a belt 6 and pockets I. t The lower portion of the garment includes legs 8 and 9 forming trousers and having a Waist portion lll extending upwardly under or within the coat and attached thereto by stitches II.
The upper end of the body portion or coat opens and has overlapping margins I2 and I3 extending laterally and downwardly from the collar opening to the underside of the sleeve 3. The outer portion I3 may be attached to the inner portion I2 by fasteners of any appropriate type, preferably of an ornamental design such as buttons I4 fastened to the portion i 2 and engageable with buttonholes I formed in the marginal portion I3.
The garment is also open from the lower end I6 of the opening just described approximately to the point I1. 'Ihe edges of the coat at the sides of the opening are attached to the trousers by stitches II'. Tapes I8 and I9 carrying, respectively, releasable and engageable fasteners 2li and 2| are attached to the margins along the opening between the points I6 and I'I in a novel manner. As shown, the margins 22 along the opening are folded inwardly, the tapes I8 and |9 are laid upon the folded margins 22, and bands 23 having their adjacent edges enclosed in binding strips 24 are laid upon the tapes I B and I9. Rows of stitches 25 pass through the parts 24, 23, I8 and I9, 22 and the margins along the opening, and secure these parts together, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The opposite edges of the bands 23 are enclosed in bindings 25 and attached to the garment by stitches 2l. In this way, the hooks 23 and 2| are held out of contact with the body of the wearer or the underwear worn by the wearer, which is a distinct advantage. A slide 28 is connected with the fasteners 2|) and 2| and is slidable along the series of fasteners to engagel and disengage them. As stated, these fasteners extend between the points I6 and I l and the slide 28 is moved downwardly from the point I6 to the point I'I to open the garment, and is moved upwardly from the point I'i to the point I6 to close the garment. 'I'he belt II crosses these fasteners and cooperates therewith to hold the garment to the form of the wearer.
A scarf may be provided in connection with the upper end of the garment and have its central portion 23 attached to the upper end of the rear of the garment, and end portions 3l) which may be placed around the neck of the wearer and attached in any appropriate manner.
The garment shown additionally comprises an elastic cuff 3| in the lower portion of each leg. The cuffs 3| are attached to the lower end of elastic supporting members 32 having their upper ends secured to the legs of the garment by stitches 33. The adjacent ends of the supporting members 32 are unattached to each other, and also the adjacent ends of the cuffs 3| are unattached to each other, so that the composite cu devices may be opened from their lower ends to their upper ends to facilitate getting into and out of the garment. The edges of the cuffs 3| are provided with releasable and engageable fastener elements 34, whereby the cuffs may be held closely around the ankles of the wearer, leaving the lower ends of the legs proper of the garment at full size.
The garment may be varied widely in numerous particulars other than those specifically suggested without departure from the nature and principle of the invention.
