- HAIR COMB ATTACHMENT AND CLEANER Filed JTlly 11, 1938 A? nmuwl unmmw INVENTQR. .4 04m; /W0/"//5 ATTORNEYS Patented Oct. 31, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HAIR. coMe ATTACHMENT AND CLEANER Louis Morris, Kansas City, Mo. Application July 11, 1938, Serial No. 218,618 3 Claims. (01. 132-28) This invention relates to hair combs and attachments therefor, and the primary object is to provide means therein for preventing the collec- H tion of lint and dirt between the teeth of the comb.
One of the important aims of this invention is the provision of an attachment for hair combs which attachment may be quickly and conveniently moved to and from the operative position, whereby it may be cleaned after each hair combing operation and replaced so as to be carried by the comb without detracting from its appearance nor rendering the same bulky, unwieldy or inoperative. Another important object of this invention is the provision of a new article of manufacture in the nature of an attachment for hair combs, which attachment may be constructed of sheet metal at a low figure so that it may be made a part of a new comb orsold as a separate unit for association with combs of the conventional character now on the market.
It is well-known in the art that hair combs become objectionably dirty because of the way in which dirt or lint collects between the teeth of the comb and their base. This collection of foreign matter is due to the scraping action which the inner edge of the comb back has upon the hair and it is an object of this invention to eliminate such scraping action by the placement of specially formed blades which contact the hair and move therealong, so that lint is collected on the blades from which it may be quickly removed by the operator. T
The broad concepts of this invention might b embodied in a number of different forms of an attachment, two of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an ordinary hair 40 v comb having an attachment thereon made in accordance with the present invention.-
Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross sectional view through the comb and the attachment taken on line II--II of Fig. 1. I
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of the form of attachment illustrated in Fig. 1, but show ing the same entirely removed from association with a comb.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevation ing a modified form of the invention in place.
Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view taken on line V-V of Fig. 4; and,
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of the of a hair comb showing an attachment embodywith the comb. V
The form of attachment illustrated in Figs. -1 to 3 inclusive, comprises a body of sheet metal attachment entirely removed from association formed to snugly fit the back 8 of an ordinary comb which has teeth- I'll projecting from one edge of the back. Teeth and back are disposed in substantially the same plane so that the comb is what is known to the trade as a fiat one.
The body l2 of the attachment is U-shaped in transverse cross section and resilient in nature so that the legs I4 of the body tightly grip the sides of back 8.
Blades I5 are created along the free edges of legs M and these blades extend downwardly and outwardly to present scraping edges l8 which engage the hair 20. Edges 18 are spaced outwardly from the sides of teeth l0 and are preferably straight from end to end. These edges l8 of blades 16 are between the tip and base of teeth I (I so that back 8 does not engage hair 20. In fact, body I2 should be so formed as to snugly'house back 8 to present a comb having a neat appearance such as shown in Fig. l.
The bight of body l2 interconnects blades [6 and in the illustrated embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, this bight embraces back 8.
In the modified form of the invention, shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6, the comb has a back 3|] which may be shouldered as at 32 for the hereinafter described purpose.
Teeth 34 of this comb are precisely the same as teeth ll] of the comb shown in Fig. l, and the sheet metal body of the modified form is also substantially U-shaped in cross section to present blades 36 having edges 38 that are straight from end to end and positioned between the base and tip of teeth 34. 'The bight of this body, however,
is provided with a number of perforations 40 through which passes teeth 34 of the comb. The
. end of the body. This element is in the nature of a small bail 42, the ends of which are pivotally secured to blades 36. Whenthis element 42 is swung to the position. shown in Fig. 4, its bight will engage shoulder 32 and securely yet removably hold the attachment in place.
When the comb attachment embodying either form illustrated, is used, it will collect lint and other foreign matter from the hair 20, but due to the smooth, straight nature of the blades, they may be quickly and easily wiped so that the comb may be put away for future use without the said foreign matter being retained thereon.
Manifestly, the attachment may be quickly removed from the comb for wiping and replaced in the operative position where it is carried until next needed.
Such changes and modifications as falls in the scope of the appended claims may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. An attachment for a hair comb, having a back and teeth projecting therefrom, comprising a downwardly and outwardly inclined blade along each longitudinal side respectively of the comb at the zone of juncture between the teeth and the back of the comb; a wall extending transversely across the comb to interconnect the blades; and means for removably securing the blades in position, said wall being provided with a plurality of perforations through each of which extends a tooth of the comb.
2. As a new article of manufacture, an attachment of the character described for hair combs,
having a back and teeth extending from one edge of the back, which attachment comprises a sheet metal body, U-shaped in cross section and provided with perforations along the bight thereof, said body having outwardly inclined marginal blades along the free edges thereof, the said edges being continuous and disposed in spaced relation to the sides of the said comb at the zone of connection between the back and said teeth thereof, said teeth of the comb extending through the perforations of the body.
3. As a new article of manufacture, an attachment of the character described for hair combs having a back and teeth extending from one edge of the back, which attachment comprises a sheet metal body, U-shaped in cross section and provided with perforations along the bight thereof, said body having downwardly and outwardly inclined marginal blades along the free edges thereof, the said edges being continuous and disposed in spaced relation to the sides of the said comb at the zone of connection between the back and said teeth thereof, said teeth of the comb extending through the perforations of the body; and elements on the body for removably securing the attachment in place on the comb.
