Description

G. V. MILLER.
COMB,
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 16, 1921.
INVENTOR ATTORNEY GRACE V. IVIILLER, 0F OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
COMB.
Application filed June 16,
To all w item it may concern Be it known that I, (insert V. lVlrLLnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented a new and useful Comb, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to combs, and particularly to a device of this character which is sanitary and useful for cleansing the hair and scalp.
It is my experience that the conventional comb does not cleanse the hair or scalp, and the use of a hair brush, with or without a comb, flattens the hair without removing dirt and. accumulations of dust and gummy substances, and the scalp is thereby irritated. and not cleansed.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple, sanitary comb which may be used for cleansing the hair and for massagingand cleansing the scalp without injury to the hair or scalp.
I attain these objects and other advantages by means of the combination of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1, is a front elevation of a comb embodying my invention; Figure i is a rear elevation of the same; Figure 3, a top view of the same; Figure l, is an end view of the same and, Figure 5, is a cross section of the same, on the line 55 in Figure 2.
Similar numerals of reference refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views.
leferring to the drawings-the numeral .1, designates a comb constructed in accordance with my invention and which coinprises a rear member 2, having teeth sections l, the inner sides of the teeth are arranged to lie in the plane of the member. At the upper corners of the member are beveled shoulders 5, which are provided for a purpose that will presently appear. On the lower ends of the teeth l, are tapered portions forming barbs 6, A front member 7, having a plane inner side adapted for lying on the member 2, is provided with teeth 8, which are a little shorter than teeth 4, and the ends of the teeth 8, are beveled to lit with the barbs 6, and the beveled ends of the teeth are indented or corrugated. The upper corners of the member 7, are cut away and the cut away portions are adapted for fitting with and frictionally engaging the Specification of Letters Patent.
1921. Serial No. 478,158.
shoulders 5, on the back member to thereby hold the front and back members assembled by the friction of the parts involved and thereafter to beheld by the pressure of the hand of the user. The fitting of the front member with the rear member is accomplished by placing and pressing the cut away corners of the front member in close adjustment with the shoulders 55, and also placing the beveled ends of the teeth 8, in close adjustment with the barbs 6, thereby the members are membered to form a comb. A concaved recess 9, is formed in the upper edge of the member 2, as a convenience for separating the members by the fingers. Between the front and back members an absorbent cotton sheet 10, is placed or spread to cover the inner sides of the teeth sections, which sheet of cotton is dimensioned to be clamped between the body portions of the members and extend below the ends of the teeth a suitable distance to allow the surplus to be turned back upon the teeth, as is shown at 11, in Figure 1, the surplus mentioned being designated by dotted line 12, in Figure 1. Slits 13, are made in the cotton sheet 10, between the teeth, thereby forming of the slitted portions cotton brushes 14.
To assemble the parts, a suitable sheet of cotton or other suitable fabric is laid on the inner side of the rear member 2, and the front member 7, then placed on the sheet and fitted between the shoulders 5, and the .barbs 6, the cotton being thereby pressed flat and clamped between the members. The cotton sheet is arranged. to hang a distance below the teeth of the comb from the points of the barbs 6, and this hanging portion of the sheet is turned back upon the front member, as shown at 'll, in Figure 1, and after being thus folded the sheet of cotton is slitted. between the teeth of the comb and the slitted portions turned down and back upon the back of the points of the teeth and there manipulated by the fingers to substantially conform with the contour of the teeth, whereupon, the comb is operatively assembled and ready for use. The hair is first combed by the conventional comb and brush and mats and tangles removed, thereafter, the combing device is used, starting to comb at the edge of the hair and moving toward the top of the head and making strokes entirely through. the length of the hair. The teeth of the comb being covered with the cotton brushes effects a gentle combing, brushing, and Wiping of the hair and scalp at the same time. Ifit is desired to treat the hair or scalp the comb affords opportunity for applying medicine and ointments to the cotton brushes.
Having described my invention what I claim is- A hair and scalp cleaning comb, consisting of matched comb members, said members comprising a rear comb member having the back thereof provided With shoulders and having teeth terminating with barbs,
and a front comb member disposed on said rear comb member and detainingly held thereon by the shoulders and barbs on the latter member, said front comb member having teeth registering with the teeth on said rear member and normally fitting the barbs Qnthe teeth. of the latter member, and a sheet of absorbent material disposed between said comb members, the sheet being slitted between thcteeth of the comb members to form of the slitted portions brushes.
