Description

May 17, 1949. N. GAMBINO HA IR COMB DEVICE v Filed May 7, 1946 Patented May 17, 1949 UNITE-D STATESPATENT OFFICE Nate Gambino, Modesto, Calif. Application May 7, 1946, Serial No. 667,857
This invention relates to toilet articles and more particularly to hair combs.
A main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved hair comb device which is provided with means for collecting the various deposits present in the hair such as loose dandrufi, lint, dust, and the like, without clogging up the spaces between the comb teeth.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved hair comb device of simple construction which is inexpensive to manufacture, said device including a collection chamber for foreign material in the hair, said chamber being Very accessible for removing the collected material when the comb device is to be cleaned.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and claims, and from the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is an elevational view of a comb device constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is an end view of the comb device of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a transverse cross sectional view of the comb device of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of an end portion of the comb device of Figure 1 with the closure member thereof removed.
Figure 5 is a perspective View of a closure member employed with the comb device of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing, the comb device comprises a body portion II consisting of an elongated hollow relatively flat upper portion I2 which is generally rectangular in cross-section, said upper portion having integrally formed therewith a plurality of depending comb teeth I3 extending along the entire length of portion I2 and evenly spaced with respect to each other along said length. As shown in Figures 2 and 3, the teeth I3 are small in transverse width as compared to the transverse width of the hollow upper portion I2 and are positioned at one side of said upper portion. The side wall of said upper portion adjacent the teeth I3 terminates a short distance above the plane of the bottom wall thereof, said bottom wall, designated at I4, terminating a short distance inwardly of the plane of said side wall. There is thus defined between the upper end portion-s of the adjacent teeth I3 :an inclined opening I5 which leads into the interior of the hollow upper portion I2 of the comb. The forward edge of lower wall I4, indicated at 1'6, is so positioned that when the comb is drawn 4 Claims. (Cl. 132-11) through the hair (toward the right, if the comb is positioned as shown in Figure 2 and 3) the edge I 6 between the upper portions of adjacent comb teeth acts as a scraping blade to scrape foreign material from the hair and to guide the scraped material into the hollow upper portion I2. Said hollow upper portion thus functions as a collection chamber for the dislodged foreign material.
The side walls of portion I2 are formed with a pair of longitudinal grooves H, H and engaged in these grooves are the inturned flanges I8, I8 of a channel-shaped closure member I9 which normally overlies the open top end of hollow portion I2. When the interior of said hollow portion is to be cleaned, closure member I9 is removed by sliding it longitudinally in grooves H, H to thereby disengage it from the body portion of the comb. After the collected foreign material has been cleaned out of hollow portion I2 the closure member I9 may be replaced by engaging the inturned flanges I8, I8 in grooves I1, I! and sliding the closure member I9 back to overlying position with respect to the top of hollow portion I2.
The provision of the hollow receptacle I2 at the upper portion of the comb avoids the unsightly deposit of loose hair, fluff, dandruff, and the like, around the root portion of the comb teeth as occurs in conventional combs, inasmuch as in the comb of the present invention practically all dislodged material from the hair is forced through the inclined openings I5 into the collection chamber by the combing action, and the collecting action is aided by the scraping action of the horizontal edges I6 at the bottom of said openings.
While a specific embodiment of a dirt-col1ecting hair comb has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various modifications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention other than as defined by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A comb device comprising a hollow, substantially flat, elongated body member, a plurality of comb teeth depending from one side of said body member, said teeth being relatively small in transverse width com-pared to the transverse width of the body member, the side wall of the body member adjacent the teeth terminating a short distance above the plane of the bottom wall of the body member and the bottom wall terminating a short distance from the plane of said side wall to ithereby define openings between the root portions of adjacent comb teeth, said openings being inclined upwardly with respect to the plane of the bottom wall.
2. A comb device, comprising a hollow elongated body including a front and a :bottom wall lying in intersecting planes but terminating in spaced free edges, and a plurality of spaced comb teeth dependingflfrdm said free -"edgesgofsaid side and bottomw'all} whereby to provi'de diagonally downwardly and outwardly directed openings from the interior of said body between said teeth?- 3. A comb device, comprising a holl-oweelongated body including a, front and a bottomwall lying in intersecting planes but tenni-n atinga ims spaced free edges, and :a plurality of spaced comb teeth depending from said free'edg'es of 'said sid" and bottom wall, whereby to provide diagonally from the interior of said body between said teeth,
said teeth having front edges lying substantialfly, inltheplarie -otjsaid frontw'all',"
