s claim. (0L isz-79)' This invention relates tov a combined lipstick and applicator and has for its principal object the provision of a device oi this character wherein the cover members may be selectively 'released v and removed by exerting the proper torsional strain on said caps and then pulling them in opposite directions.
A further object of the invention'is the pro. vision of a combined lipstick and applicator wherein all the/relatively movable parts at each end of the device may be secured together.
Other objects are simplicity and economy 'of construction. and ease and speed of operation.
at Il. This slot is offset at 4l to form a shoulder 42. It will'be noted that oiTset 4I) is on the top side of slot 38, while onset 22 is on the bottom side of slot I6, as shown in the Ivarious gures-also the offsets 22 and 40 are ci suitable lengths to 5 receive the lug 32.
When the parts are in the'position shown in Pig. l, the lug 22 is positioned in offsets 22 and 4I so that the shoulders 26` and 42 will engage the lug' v32 to preclude relative longitudinal move- 10 Iment of the cap on the body member or longitudinal movement of the carrier relative to the lbody member. When it is desired to remove the Reference will nowbe had to the drawing cap 36, it is necessary to rotate the cap on the and'then exert an outward pull on the cap. By
rotating cap through a slightly greater arc, this lug 32 may also be moved out of oiset 22 so Fig. 1 with one of the caps removed and the'lip- Fig. 4 is a cross sectionalview taken on liney 1V-1VorF1g. 1. Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view taken on line V-Vof Fig. 1; and,
Fig. 6 is a reduced elevation of the device with 'the applicator in position for Throughout the several views, like reference characters refer to similar parts and the numeral l0 designates a tubular body member having a pair of spaced apart, annular beads I2 and I4, formed adjacent the central portion thereof. Each end portion of body member i0 is slotted inwardly as at I6 and I8.' and may be provided with inwardly projecting ears 20 to facilitate proper 4that the carriage may be moved in the body member to expose the lipstick for use. When the lip- 20 stick has been exposed for use and it is desired to 1 position the cap 36, the cap slot is fitted over lug 32 about I0 and then pushed to position to reposition the carrier' 3l.
The opposite end of the device is provided with 25 a carrier 44 having a projecting lug 46 which extends. through slot i8 and also through a slot 48 formed in 'cap 50. which serves to cover an applicator i2 mounted in carrier 44. Slot 48 is oiset at 54 to form a shoulder A56. The lug 4B on car- 30 rler 44 'is adapted to be seated in oiset 24 and 54, as shown in Fig. 1, to secure the parts in fixed relaaction of the parts whenithe device is in operation.
Each of the slots are respectively oiIset adjacent theirv inner ends as at 22 and 24, to present shoulders 26 and 28 transversely of the respective slots and on corresponding sides thereof.
A carrier 30 comprising a cup-shaped member is adapted to slidably move lin the tubular body member with a transversely extending lug 32 carried thereby extended through slot Il. The lipstick material 34 fits snugly into carrier 2l and extends therebeyond so that when the carrier is moved in i0, the lipstick will be exposed beyond the end of I0. Ears 20 serve to engage lug 32 to prevent accidental removal of the carrier 3l from the body member. A cap' It slotted inwardly from its open end is adapted to telescope and close the open end of the body member with the inner edge thereof resting against the bead I2.
Cap 36 is slotted inwardly from its open end tion against longitudinally exerted force.
The arrangement and relative relation of the parts'are such that the operator may selectively 35 secure one of the caps in operative relation and at the same time release the other cap by simply exerting a torsional force on each cap in opposite directions. By simply reversing the direction of the torsional forces, the cap previously secured.
will be released and the other cap will be secured.
When a cap is released it may be easily withdrawn from the body member by exerting a 1onused. the other is completely capped .to .preclude contact with the ilngers of the operator.
Instead of cutting the material away to form the bayonet slots, it is apparent that the metal of the cap might be simply pressed outwardly to form the desired passageway for the lugs and to cooperate therewith to secure the parts together. In this case. the lugs will be completely covered when the caps are in the operative po.- sition.
A further advantage of the structure as shown is the provision of means for moving the lipstick or applicator to the operative position as the corresponding cap is removed. This is accomplished by slightly rotating the cap to engage the lug on thecarrier and then moving the two longitudinally of the body member, simultaneously. When the carrier moves outwardly to its limit, the cap is slightly rotated to release its hold on the lug.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
l. A combined lipstick and applicator comprising a tubular b'ody member having a slot extending inwardly from each end thereof, the inner end portion of each of said slots being oilset to form a shoulder; a carrier, slidably mounted in each end portion of said body member, having a transverse lug adapted to extend through the adjacent slot; a cap for each end portion of said body member having a bayonet slot to receive the respective lugs to move them as said cap is rotated on said body member.
2. A combined lipstick and applicator comprising a tubular body member having a slot extending inwardly from each end thereof, the inner end portion of each of said slots being oiset in the same direction to form a shoulder:
a carrier mounted in each end portion of said body member and having a transverse lug adapt' ed to extend through the adjacent slot; a cap for each end portion of said body member having a bayonet slot to receive the respective lug and move it to or from a secured position.
3. A combined lipstick and applicator comprising a tubular body member having a slot ex,-
vtending inwardly from each end thereof, the
inner end po'rtion of each of said slots being offset to form a recess; a carrier mounted in each end portion of the body member and having a armeni transverse lug adapted to extend through the adjacent slot: a cap for each end portion of said body member having a slot formed inwardly from the open end thereof and provided with a recess adjacent its inner end, the recesses in said body member and cap being so related to the adjacent lug that the lug may be simultaneously positioned therein to secure the cap.
body member and carrier against relative lon gitudinal movement.
4. A combined lipstick and applicator comprising a tubular body` member having a slot extending inwardly from each end thereof, the inner end portion of each of said slots being oi!- set to form a recess extending in like directions; a cap for each end portion oi' the body member, each havingv a slot formed inwardly from the open end thereof, each slot being onset at its inner portion in a direction opposed to the adjacent recess in the body member, and a carrier positioned in said body member and having a transversely disposed lug extending through the adjacent slots in said body member and cap and adapted to be positioned in the recesses in said slots to secure the cap. body member, and carrier against relative longitudinal movement.
5. A combined lipstick and applicator comprising a tubular body member having a slot extending inwardly from each end thereof, the inner end portion of each of said slots being oil'set to form a recess extending in like directions; a
cap for each end portion of the body member, each having'a slot formed inwardly from the open end thereof, each slot being offset at its inner portion in a direction opposed to the adjacent recess in the body member; and a carrier positioned in each body member and having a transversely disposed lug extending through the adjacent slots in said body member and cap and adapted to be positioned in the recesses in said slots to secure the cap, body member and carrier against relative longitudinal movement, the slots, recesses and caps at opposite endsof the. body member being so related that when a torsional force is exertedl in opposite directions to the caps. one of the caps will be secured againstlongitudinal movement relative to the body member and the other cap will be free to move longitudinally from the body member.
