H ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 25, 1934 NITED STATES TENT ries 7 Claims.
My present invention relates to holding and dispensing devices and more particularly to an improved device of this character adapted for holding cosmetics, such as lipsticks, and for the dispensing thereof by manipulating the device with one hand.
Afeature of my invention is the assembly of a casing having an open end, the opposite end being closed, a sleeve rotatively mounted within to the casing and having a portion thereof extending outward from the open end of the casing, whereby the sleeve may be rotated by the fingers of one hand while simultaneously holding the casing in the same hand, the lipstick or other suitable article being suitably supported and its support coordinated with the rotated sleeve to propel and repel the article substantially rectilinearly, that is to say, without substantially turning cr twisting.
More particularly, the lipstick or other article is received and supported within a carrier memher and cam follower connections provided be ferred embodiments of my invention,
Fig. 1 is an elevation showing the manner in which the device is held in the hand and the propel-repel mechanism operated;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation through one form of my invention and with the lipstick shown housed within the outer casing;

In the accompanying drawings illustrating pre-.
((33. ENG-56) Fig. 11 is an elevation of the propellipg mechanism;
Fig. 12 is an elevation of the combined propelled mechanism and lipstick carrier;
Fig. 13 is a perspective view of the carrier guiding means;
Fig. 14 is a sectional plan view on the line l4l4 of Fig. 10;
Fig. 15 is a sectional plan view similar to Fig. 14 but with the outer casing shown in oval form; and
Fig. 16 is a sectional plan view similar to Figs. 14 and 15 but showing the outer casing as a multi-sided tube.
Referring to the drawings, and particularly to Figs. 1 to 9, inclusive, 10 designates the outer casing having one endthe bottom endclosed as indicated at 11 and provided at its top end with a hinge member 12 which cooperates with a hinge pin to hold a cover 14 in position thereon, the cover 14 fitting over the top open end of the the outer casing 10, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Fitting within the casing 10 and extending throughout the length thereof is a guiding member 15, this member 15 being cylindrical in form and provided on the lower half thereof with a plurality of parallelly arranged slots 16. This member 15 is formed of a sheet 17- of preferably spring metal such as sheet brass, rectangular in flat form as shown in Fig. 9 and with the slots 16 spaced as shown in such figure. The rectangular sheet 1! is then formed about a mandrel or in any other suitable manner and the inherent spring qualities of the metal of which it is composed insure that it will engage the inner walls of the outer casing 10 with suflicient friction to prevent rotation thereof upon manipulation of the propel-repel mechanism.
Fitting within the open end of the outer casing 10 and within the guiding member 15 is acylindrical member 18, see Fig. 5, provided at its top end with a laterally extending knurled portion 19, the lower side of which rests against the upper edge of the open end'of the outer casing 10. I The cylindrical member 18 is provided with a helical groove 20, this groove being rolled into the metal of the member 18 and forming an internal inwardly projecting helical screw member or cam 22 in the interior of the member. 23, see Fig. 6, indicates the combined carrier and propelled mechanism, this mechanism being cylindrical in form and the carrier being formed separate therefrom and constituting a thin metal cup 24 in which is placed a stick 25 of the article to be dispensed, as for instance, a lipstick. The
tubular member 23 has formed therein a depressed helical screw or cam groove 26 which is of the same pitch as the helical screw or cam 20 in the propel mechanism 18. It is obvious that rotation of the propel mechanism 18 by means of the knurled projection 18 will result in a relative movement of the cylindrical carrier member 23 into and out of the cylindrical member 18 and therefore a movement of the lipstick from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in either Figs. 1 or 3. Formed integral with the cylindrical member 23 by punching therefrom are radially extending lugs or projections 28 which fit into the parallelly arranged slots 16 in the guide member 15 .as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
The device is adapted to be held in the hand 29 of the operator with the fingers 30 thereof encircling the outer casing 10 and with the thumb 31' in engagement with the knurled portion 19 and, assuming the device to have been constructed and arranged as above described, it is obvious that if the cover 14 has been moved from the position shewn in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 3, that the operator, by properly manipulating the thumb 31, may rotate the propel mechanism 18 in such a manner as to move the carrier cylinder 23 longitudinally of the outer casing 10 so as to bring the lipstick 25 into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and that after using such lipstick the operator may rotate the propel mechanism 18 in reverse direction, to return the lipstick 25 to the position shown in Fig. 2, after which the cover 14 may be moved from its open position shown in Fig. 3 to its closed position shown in Fig. 2.
Referring now to Figs. 10 to 16, inclusive, showing another form of my invention, 35 designates the outer casing and this outer casing may be cylindrical in form as indicated by 36 in'Fig. 14 or oval or other non-circular form as indicated by the reference number 37 in Fig. 15, or multisided as shown by reference number 38 in Fig.
. 16. The outer casings 35, 36, 3'7, 38 are closed at the bottom as indicated by the reference numeral 39 in Fig. 10 and within such outer casing is placed a cylindrical member 40 oLpreferably hard spring material, suchas thin spring brass I for example, this cylindrical member having formed integrally therewith a plurality of parallelly arranged grooves 41 extending longitudinally of the member 40. The natural resiliency of the metal comprising the cylindrical member casing, 'as the casing 35, has formed integral therewith at the upper end thereof a. hinge member 42 which cooperates with a hinge pin 43 on a cover 44, the cover 44 being used to close the open end of the outer casing and protect the lip- Y stick 25 encased therein; 45, see Fig. 11, desig- .a knurled operating member 46, the lower side .of which engages with the upper open edge of the outer casing as shown in Fig. 10. Also, this propel mechanism has formed therein a helical groove 47 which forms an internal helical cam (not shown) but which is similar to the internal cam 22 on the propel mechanism 18, as shown in 4 Fig. 2 and which internal cam engages with a helical cam groove 47 formed on the outer surface of a combined carrier and propelled cylinder 48 as shown in Fig. 12. This combined carrier and propelled member 48 has formed therein a cam groove 47' and at the lower end of the member 48 are radially extending projections 49 which engage in the grooves 41 in the cylinder 40.
Assuming the device to have been constructed as above described, it is obvious that by properly rotating the propel member 45 that the combined carrier and propelled member 48 may be moved longitudinally of the outer casings 35, 36, 37 or 38, and without rotary movement being imparted thereto, this being prevented by the interengaging projections 49 and longitudinal grooves 41 and therefore the lipstick- 25 may be moved from its exposed position within the outer casings as shown in Fig. 10 or to a point within such casings where the same will be protected from injury. Also, it is obvious that this operation of the device may be completely performed by one hand of the operator as described in connection w'th the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 9, inclusive.
While I have necessarily shown the embodiments of my invention somewhat in detail, it is to be understood that I may var}, the size, shape and arrangement of parts comprsing my device ion within relatively wide limits without departing 1 from the spirit of the invention.
I claim: 1. In a receptacle for dispensing cosmetics an adapted to be held in and manipulated by one hand, the combination of an outer casing having one end closed and the other end open, a guideway inside said casing extending in a straight line and parallel to the axis of the casing, a carrier for the cosmetic to be dispensed located within the casing, means on the carrier associated with the guideway for preventing rotary but permitting axial movement of the carrier with respect to the casing, a propelling member fitting in and rotatable with respect to the casing and having a portion thereof extending outward from the open end of the casing, whereby the same may be rotated by one hand while simultaneously holding the casing and helically formed cooperating cam groove and bead cam follower means on the propelling member and carrier, whereby rotary movement of the propelling means will displace the carrier to move the cosmetic to and from concealed and exposed positions and substantially axially with respect to the casing.
