This invention relates to a holder or coni operated with one hand to shift the stick and l its' carrier.

It is another object of the invention to providea construction of this type of device in which when not in use the adjusting means for the carrier and the stick is entirely enclosed and inaccessible for accidental operation.

It is still anotherobject ofthe invention to provide a carrier'of this type in -Whichthere is no sharp edge at the end where the cosmetic ,is exposed to either cut the lips of the user or to scrape the sides ofthe stickY should it not be true or properly centered inthe holder.

, Itis still another object of the-invention to provide a construction which may be -so held in use that the stick can not bepushed back into the holder by a pressure against the object upon which it is being used.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts'as will be more fully disclosed in connection with the accompanying drawing. f

In all thelipstick and similar containers of 65 which I am aware at the present time the enclosed stick vof cosmetic or the like is shifted inthe casing to expose it at theopen end thereof or Withdraw it into the casing by means of a rotatable grip at the closed end ofV the casing. Thus, for convenient operation,

it is necessary for the user to hold the casing v in one hand while operating the rotary member to shift the stick with'the other hand.v Also,^this rotary member is exposed so that while the container is being carried in a hand bag or the like, it is apt to be accidentally operatedto crush or break the stick and thus make it unattractive, and also the loosened" cosmetic gets into the movable elements interfering with proper operation and in ad- -dition because of the resultantmessy appearf ance is very objectionable. I have overcome these objections by providing an improved container in which the rotary element or gri for shifting the cosmetic stick is located adEi jacent the open end of the casing so that' when the container is held in the hand, this rotary grip may be held between. the thumb v and first finger of tbe same hand to adjust the position of the stick andv also may be held firmly while in use to prevent pressure on theI stick from forcing it back into the casing.-A j This also permits the`use of a cap or closure for the open end of the casing which will enclose this grip and absolutely prevent accidental operation thereof while the container is closed or being carried in 'a hand bag or the like. i

` Referring first to Figs-1 to of the draw- 100 ing, the container comprises an outer shell or casing 11 which is closed at one end 12 and open at its opposite endr4 Carried within the casing is a member 13 which is held stationary in the casing. It is preferably in the form of a sleeve which is tight in the casing so as to be held by frictional engagement againstturninginthecasing. This stationar member carries a spiral cam shoulder, pre erably in the form of a slot or groove 14. Mounted for rotary movement within this member 13 is a sleeve 15 having a longitudinal cam shoulder, preferabl formed by a slot 16. This sleeve is provi ed with spaced peripheral beads or

17 and 18 in which the member 13 is located and which will properly locate the two

13 and 15 in correct relation toeach other. The lower end of the member v or sleeve 15 may be open or closed, but in the present4 construction is shown open. At its upper end it is rolled outwardly over the open end 19 of the casing 11 as shown in Fig. 1 and extended down on the outside thereof as shown at 20 so as to enclose this open end. Within the rotary sleeve .15 is a carrier 21 for a lipstick or other similar article 22, the carrier 21 being preferably in the form of a cup or sleeve open at its upper end to receive the stick 22, and also preferably having an opening 23 in its lower end although the use of this opening is optionable. This carrier is slidable longitudinally in the rotary sleeve 15 which movement is secured by coaction of the shoulders on op osite sides of the

It will thus be evident that on rotation of the member 15 the carrier 24 will be rotated and the projecting end of the pin will move along the slot 15, thus shiftin the carrier and the stick 22 ylongjtudina y of the device to project its freeend from the open end of the casing or to retract it into the casing as desired. It will, of course, be understood that as it is relative turning movements between the

It will be evident from an inspection of the drawing that the folded over upper end 20 of the sleeve 15 4forms a smooth rounded edge 26 at the end of the casing which covers the sharp edge of the casing and provides a smooth round end which can not cut or injure the lips.' It also effectively eliminates any sharp edge which could cut or scrape the stick 22 as it is shifted outwardly or inwardly should the stick not be properly centered,

and thus prevents the cosmetic being scraped oil' which would get' into the movable elements and prevent their proper functioning, orto make the device messy and unattrac- .tive. To hold the rotary sleeve 15 with sufcient pressure to preventits too easy movement and also` to give more uniform operation, the member 13 may be provided with one or more spring lugs 27 to frictionally engagethe outer surface of the sleeve 15 and g1ve sufficient resistance to its turning to normally hold it in adjusted position, but still permit easy manipulation thereof,

It will be evident from the foregoing description that the folded over end 20 of the sleeve 15 provides a band or grip adjacent the open end of the casing which is accessible on the outside of the casing and, therefore, by merely gripping this band and rotating the sleeve 15, the stick 22 may be adjusted as desired. This permits the use of an outer caslng which is entirely closed at its lower end, and also permits the easy adjustment of the stick 22 with one hand while the device 1s being used. Thus, the operator may grip the sides of the casing in her hand and then by means of the thumb and first finger may grip the band 20 and rotate the sleeve 15 to adjust the stick 22 as desired. In the same manner', the band 20 may be held between the thumb and first finger while the device is in use to prevent the sleeve 15 turning and thus prevent longitudinal pressure on the end o the stick 22 forcing it back into the casing.

The open end of the device may be enclosed byra sui-table cap or closure 28. It is preferred to provide on the outer surface of the casin 11 a band 29 which may be formed by ro ling the band intothe casing as shown 1n Fig. 1 or by soldering onto the surface of the casing a separate ring as shown at 30 in diameter than the grip 20 as shown in Fig. 1 and the cap 'or closure 28 is of a size to tightly grip the band 29. Thus, when the cap 28 is appiled as shown in Fig. 1 it loosely enclosesA grip 2O but tightly grips the band 29 and is thus effectively held in closed position on Athe casing. As the closure is loose on the grip20, turning movements of the cap 1n applying or removing it will not turn the sleeve 15 to shift the stick 22. Also as shown in Fig. 1, as the cap 28 encloses the grip 20, this grip is entirely inaccessible when the closure isin position, thus effectively preventino` accidental shifting of the stick 22 while being carried in a bag or otherwise. The casing is preferablyl provided with a band 31 adjacent its closed end'similar to the 4band 29 so that whenv the cap orl closure 28 Fig. 9./ This band isof a somewhat larger while the device is in use, and this cap may be made of any length desired to give the appearance desired or to give a lon grip to facilitate holding the .device in t e hand while in use.

Such a construction is shown more clearly in- Fig. 7 in which the band 32, corresponding to the band 29, ismoved to a position lower on or adjacent the closed end ofthe casin and the cap or closure 33 is made' of sufliclent length to enclose practically the entire casing. 'In use the cap is removed and placed over the closed end of the casing as indicated in dotted lines and as the cap is long, it gives the effect of along casing to rated b bead 36 to form a stop to engage the edge o the c ap and limit the distance it may be forced onto the casing. In Fi 6 is shown a device in which the cap or c osure 37is made somewhat shorter while the device is in use.

This effectively permanently secures the cap to the casing and prevents it from being lost. In either of the forms shown in Figs. 1, 6 or 8 a separate and additional cap may be applied over the closed end of the casing. This cap is shown at 40 in Fig. 8, and is of the same contour and appearance as the

28 or 37 used at the opposite ends o f the device. This cap may be used to secure an improved appearance -and eifect and is intended principally for ornamentation, although it does, of course, provide an improved grip and also an extra closure. j

It is not necessary` that the endof the sleeve 15 be folded over on the outside of the end of the casin 11. It may be merely folded upon itself ande in alignment with the end of the. casing as shown at 35 in Fig. 10, or there may be a Separate band secured adjacent the end of the sleeve as indicated at 41, Fig. 11. In either case, however, a grip is provided adjacent the open end of the c sing` eans and accessible on the outside thereof by Iband at said members havinnr ,of which the sleeve 15 may be rotated. These grips are also enclosed by the closure caps the same as is the other forms, and in the form shown in Fig. 10 it also provides a rounded edge to revent injury while in use.

An a ditional advantage of this construction of holder is that the outer surfaces can be very eie'ctively ornamented in a-'large I number of different ways and to give a large variety of different effects, so that it-can be made very'attractive in appearance.

Having thus set ,forth the nature. of my invention, what I claim is:
