Definitions
- This invention relates to apparatus for twisting filaments, threads, bands and the like (hereinafter referred to as threads) and in particular to that type of apparatus in which the thread is twisted in the following manner: the thread is drawn off from a package such as a bobbin, cake or cheese (hereinafter referred to as the delivery bobbin) passed through a rotating spindle, then guided in the reverse direction forming a balloon round the delivery bobbin and is wound on to a suitable collecting device. If the delivery bobbin is kept stationary, two turns of twist are imparted to the thread for each revolution of the spindle.
- a package such as a bobbin, cake or cheese
- the object of the present invention is to provide an improved apparatus for twisting thread in the manner hereinbefore described, wherein movement of the delivery bobbin is substantially prevented by a device of the suspended weight type.
- the said improved apparatus comprises a rotatable hollow spindle and mounted thereon a conical threadguide and a delivery bobbin support, which support is prevented from rotating with the spindle by means of a weight, wherein the weight comprises a hollow element partly filledwith a liquid.
- the liquid is preferably of high specific gravity, such for example as mercury, particularly when the apparatus is to be used for twisting threads of low denier when only a relatively small balloon is formed.
- the weight may be attached to the delivery bobbin support or incorporated therewith in any desired way. For example, it may be attached to, or form part of,
- the conical thread guide if the latter is loosely mounted on the rotatable spindle and is attached to the/delivery bobbin support.
- it may be attached both to a sleeve or collar loosely mounted on the said spindle and to the delivery bobbin support.
- the conical thread guide may be loosely mounted on the rotating spindle or may be fixed thereto. If desired, a cylindrical or conical shield made for example of a transparent material, such as cellulose film, may be placed between the delivery bobbin and the balloon of the thread. formed between the conical thread guide. on the rotating spindle and the collecting device.
- a cylindrical or conical shield made for example of a transparent material, such as cellulose film, may be placed between the delivery bobbin and the balloon of the thread. formed between the conical thread guide. on the rotating spindle and the collecting device.
- Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section and Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 in Figure 1.
- a spindle l is journalled on ball bearings i in a support 3 and can be rotated by means of a belt drive around the pulley 4. 0n the spindle l a conical thread guide 5 is fixed.
- the spindle I is hollow and connects with a radial passage 6 in the guide 5.
- a sleeve 1 is loosely mounted by means o1 ball bearings 8 on the spindle I inside the thread guide 5 and hanging from the sleeve 1 and rigidly connected thereto is a hollow member 9 containing mercury l0. Fixed on top of the member 9 is a thread tensioning device II.
- a bobbin holderconsisting of a disc l2, a hollow spindle l3 and a transparent shield I4 is rigidly connected with the end of the member 9.
- the thread I5 is led from the bobbin l6 through the hollow spindle l3, chafing of the thread on the end ,of the bobbin being minimised by means of a polished aluminium disc I 1 fitting over the end of the bobbin, through the device II and the hollow spindle I, along the passage 6 andthen in the reverse direction, over the guide 5, through a guide l8 to a winding up device which is not shown.
- the spindle I is caused to rotate by the belt drive on the pulley 4 and rotates inturn the thread guide 5 and the thread 'pa ssing through the passage 6, so that the thread describes a surface of rotation or a balloon between the guides 5 and I8.
- the bobbin is in efiect supported on the rotating spindle i oscillation of the bobbin is almost completely prevented by the hanging liquid weight l0 and a the spindle by means of a weight, wherein the said weight comprises a. hollow element partly filled with a liquid.
