IMPROVEMENT IN SOCK-PROTECTORS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,538, dated J uno 17, 1879 application filed April 7, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FIELDEN SMITH, of

Quincy, in the county of Norfolk and State of Fig.2 shows the protector constructed in a slightly different manner from that shown in Fig. 1, as hereinafter described. Fig. 3 shows a piece of leather or other suitable material, cut merely into proper shape for use in the construction shown by Fig. 2, but not stitched.

A, Fig. 1, shows a piece of leather or any other suitable material, and of any thickness desired, said leather or other material to be in one whole piece, and shaped to fit the human heel by placing it upon a hard substance, and hammering the same into shape as leather is shaped for the heels of boots or shoes. This piece of leather or other material covers the back of the foot, commencing at a point about even with. the ankle-bone, and passing down over the back of and under the heel to the point E. l

B .is a piece of elastic fabric, similar to that used in the sides of boots known as Congress boots, it being about one inch in width at the top, and taperin g regularly toward the bottom, as shown in the drawings. This piece of elastic is fastened by a double row of stitchin g, d and cl, to the leather or other material, A, and the bottom of the same is secured to the bottom part of the piece of leather A by a single row of stitching, as shown in the drawings, Fig. 1.

Fastened to the elastic fabric B on the side of the same opposite the stitching d and d, and by either a single or double row of stitching, is a piece of lasting or other suitable material, (l, in the shape illustrated in Fig. 1, which passes over the foot in the manner shown.

There are two pieces of elastic fabric, one on each side of the foot, as in the case of a Congress boot, and the lasting or other maof the protector may be, if desired, lined withauy suitable material.

The construction shown by Fig. 2 is similar to that illustrated in Fig. 1, the only difference being that the piece of leather or other material, A, instead of being hammered into the shape of the heel, in the manner hereinbefore described, is cut into the shape shown by Fig. 3, and the edges 6 and c are stitched to the edges c" and 6', respectively. In all other respects the construction is the same as before described.

I consider the construction shown in Fig. l the better, because a more durable article is produced by said construction, the same being in one piece, thereby making the liability to breakage much less than in the construction shown in Fig. 2.

I claim as my invention- 1. In a sock-protector, the combination of the piece A, the elastic gores B, and the strap (1, when constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described.

2. The piece A, united to the "pieces of elastic fabric B by the scams or rows of stitches d d, in combination with the strap G, substantially as shown, and for the purpose de scribed.
