2 Claims.
This' invention relates to abrading machines and is a division of my application for U. S. Letters Patent, Serial Number 100,930, led September 15, 1936, which has rbecome Patent No. 2,120,252, dated June 14, 1938.
An important object of the invention is to provide an abrading machine adapted for manipulation by the hand, With portions of the device having dual functions.
Another Objectis to provide an abrading machine having means for collecting the material removed by the machine.
yStill another object is to provide an abrading machine as just described in which the means for collecting the material removed by the machine has, as well, another function.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specication and in which drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the no-vel abrading machine. l
Figure 2 is a similar view, but with portions removed so as to disclose the construction beneath.
Figure 3 is a vertical section through a forward portionof the abrading machine of Figures 1 and 2.
Figure 4 is a horizontal section through the forward portion of the abrading machine of Figure 3.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of Ythe novel abrading machine, the letter A designatesgenerally vthe novel machine and the letter Ba form of abrading device which may be associated therewith.
The abrading machine A includes a housing I5 which may comprise an upper arcuate wall I6, a forward end wall I1, a rearward end wall I8 and substantially paralleling side walls |9 and 20.
lThe housing I5 also includes an oifset portion 2|, extending substantially horizontally from the rearward end wall I8, provided with side walls 22 of its own but joining the side walls I9 and 20, a substantially flat upper wall 23 and a lower wall 24. This oiset portion 2| has a mouth 25 opening into the chamber or compartment 26 within the main housing comprising the walls I6 to 20, and at its end opposite the mouth 25, the offset portion may be provided with a closure 21, which may be hinged in any approved way to the oiset portion 2| and provided with a latch 28 of any approved As will be seen from Figures 2 and 3, this offset portion 2| is disposed at the lowermost portion of the housing I5 and opens into the lowermost portion of the chamber 26 Within the main housing. Consequently, there is communication between the chamber 26 and the chamber 29 within the offset portion 2|. From Figure 4 it will be noted that the width of the mouth is substantially the width of the chambers 26 and 29.
Carried by the housing I5 and projecting preferably Substantially horizontal from the rear- Ward end wall I8, may be a hand grip 30. This hand grip 30 is disposed above and spaced from the offset portion 2| so that the operator, grasping the hand grip 39, may extend his fingers into the space 3| between the hand grip 30 and offset portion 2|. The hand grip 3D may be circular in transverse cross section and is considerably of less diameter than the Width of the offset portion 2|. If desired, a bridge 32 may ioin the offset portion 2| and hand grip 30 at the rearward end 33 of the latter. Extending through the hand grip 30 vmay be a bore 34 accommodating a conductor to be later described as well as electric switch means associated with said conductor. This bore 34 extends to and opens into the chamber 26.
The side Wall I8 of the housing l5 may be provided with an opening 35 and a hinged closure 36 therefor. Suitable latches 31 may be provided to retain this closure in a closed position. Furthermore, the closure 36 may have a pair of spaced apart perforations 38, providing bearings for a pair of spindles latter described. The opposite side wall |9 may have a pair of spaced apart circular recesses 39 with the axes of one perforation 38 and recess 39 in alignment and the axes of the other perforation 38 and recess 39 in alignment.
Carried by the housing I5, are, preferably, a i
pair of spaced apart rotating members or rollers 40. Each roller 40 preferably has fiat, paralleling end faces 4|. From one end face 4| of each extends a spindle 42 and from the opposite end face 4| extends a spindle 43 provided with a pulley or wheel 44. The spindles 42 extend into the perforations 38 when the closure 36 is closed. As for the spindles 43, they maye be provided with suitable ball bearings and housings 45 encircling the end portions of the spindles 43 and accommodated within the recesses 39.
Carried by each of the rollers is suitable means for mounting abrasive material thereon. For example, each roller 40 may be provided with spaced apart, longitudinally-extending, substantially V-shaped peripheral grooves 46 which cooperate with substantially V-shaped lugs extending from tubular members later described.
Any approved means may be employed to rotate the rollers 40 (through the medium of a gear drive, a chain drive or a belt and pulley). In the example shown, a conventional motor 5D is employed in association with a belt and pulleys, and secured, for example, to the wall I6 so that it will be above of and clear of the rollers 40. A suitable conductor 5| may be connected with the motor, as is well known in the art, and extend through the bore 34 in the hand grip 30 and project from thence to any suitable source of electric energy. If desired, the hand grip 40 may carry a conventional electric switch, having a switch actuator or button 52 and operatively connected with the conductor 5|, as is well known in the art.
From the pulley 53 of the motor 50 may extend a suitable belt 54, operatively connected with the pulleys 44 upon the spindles 43.
Any approved means may also be employed, if desired, to resiliently urge the housing I5 upwardly so that, normally, the peripheries of the rollers 40 will be spaced above a surface when the machine is resting upon said surface. In the example shown, a plurality of spaced apart castors 55 may be resiliently mounted, as is generally well known in the art, and disposed at suitable positions, extending below the housing I5 as shown in Figures l to 3. When a slight downward pressure is placed upon the hand grip 30, the entire housing will be lowered so that abrading material upon the peripheries of the rollers 40 will come into contact with the surface to be worked upon by the abrading machine.
Now as for the abrading devices B, any selected two of which may be employed by the abrading machine at one time. Each of these may include a tubular member 69, with the circumference of the inner periphery thereof of a size so that it will be snugly accommodated upon the rollers 4D. Each tubular member 65 may be provided with a plurality of spaced apart lugs or projections 6|, V-shaped in transverse cross section, and these extend longitudinally of the tubular members 60 from the inner peripheries thereof.
With this construction of abrading device B and rollers 40, the former may be slipped longif tudinally over the roller 4B and is held against independent rotation, with respect to the roller, by the lugs 6| and grooves 46. When the closure 36 is lowered and the perforations 38 accommodate the spindles 42 of the rollers 40, the machine is ready for operation.
Each tubular member 60 may carry a suitable length 'Ill of abrasive-carrying flexible material.
As may be seen from Figures 1 to 3, the axes of rotation of the rollers 40 are disposed so that a portion of the rollers extends below the bottom of the housing I5. It should also be noted that the mouth 25 of the offset portion 2| faces the periphery of one of the rollers 40, being disposed so that the plane of the inner surface of the upper wall 23 of the offset portion 2I extends to about or above the axis of the nearest roller and that the plane of the inner surface of the lower wall 24 of the offset portion 2| extends well below this axis. The nearest adjacent roller is, preferably, spaced quite closely to the mouth 25. The direction of rotation of the rollers 40 is indicated by arrows in Figure 3 and material removed by the abrasive employed on the rollers 40 will be thrown mainly into the compartment within the offset portion 2|.
When the machine is in use, most of the material removed by the abrading devices will be projected into the chamber within the offset portion 2| of the housing I5 and this offset portion 2| will also protect the hand of the operator against injury when the hand grasps the hand grip, since the offset portion is relativelyvbroad and is below the hand grip.
Various changes may be made to the form of invention herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In an abrading machine, a housing provided with a chamber and with a hand grip extending rigidly outwardly from said housing; a portion of said housing being of a height less than the major portion of said housing, being horizontally offset from said major portion and being disposed below and spaced from said hand grip, said portion having a width substantially greater than the width of said hand grip and said portion being provided with a compartment having a mouth spaced from the upper portion of said chamber and opening into the lowermost portion of said chamber; means in said chamber carrying an abrasive and means for moving portions of said first-named means in a path toward and away from said mouth. l
2. In an abrading machine, a housing including an end wall and provided with a hand grip extending substantially horizontally from and secured to said end wall, a portion of said housing being offset and extending substantially horizontally beneath said hand grip and spaced therefrom, a bridge extending from the rearward end of said hand grip to said offset portion, with said hand grip lying wholly within the vertical plane of said offset portion a roller rotatably carried by said housing and adapted to carry an abrasive upon its periphery, means for rotating said roller, said housing being provided with a compartment having a mouth opening towards said roller and spaced adjacent thereof, said .compartment being disposed in said portion of said housing and located so that material removed by Said abrasive upon rotation of said roller will be discharged thereinto, whereby said portion provides a compartment to receive said material and protects the hand of the user of said abrasive machine when the hand of the user grasps said hand grip and remploys said abrading machine.
