2 Claims.
This invention relates to abrading machines.
An important object of the invention is to provide an abrading machine adapted to receive any of a plurality of selected abrading devices.
Another important object is to provide an abrading machine which may be quickly and easily equipped with any of a plurality of selected abrading devices.
Another object is to provide an abrading machine adapted formanipulation by the hand, with portions of the device having dual functions.
Still another object is to provide a novel abrading device which may be readily coupled to an abrading machine.
Yet another object is to provide a novel section of abrading material adapted for use with the abrading device and abrading machine above described.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification and in which drawings:-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the novel abrading machine.
Figure 2 is a similar view, but with portions removed so as to disclose the construction beneath.
Figure 3 is a vertical section through an abrading device containing portions of the novel abrading machine.
Figure 4 is a section substantially on the line 6 4 of Figure 3, the abrading devices being shown in top plan.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a roller preferably employed in the novel abrading machine, and one embodiment of abrading device associated therewith.
Figure 6 is an end elevation of the roller shown in Figure 5.

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the novel abrading machine and various abrading devices to be associatedtherewith, the letter A designates generally the novel abrading machine and the letters, B, D and E forms of abrading devices which may be associated therewith while the letter C, a section of abrading material which may be employed with the abrading device B.
The abrading machine A includes a housing I5 which may comprise an upper arcuate Wall I6, a forward end Wall I'l, a rearward end wall I8 and substantially paralleling side walls I9 and 20. The housing also includes an oiiset portion 2 I, extending substantially horizontally from the rearward end wall 8, provided with side walls 22 of its own but joining the side walls I9 and 20, a substantially at upper wall 23 and a lower wall 24. This offset portion 2| has a mouth 25 opening into the chamber or compartment 25 within the main housing comprising the walls I6 to 2|), and at its end opposite the mouth 25, the offset portion may be provided with a closure 2l, which may be hinged in any approved way to the offset portion 2| and provided with a latch 28 of any approved kind. As will be seen from Figures 2 and 3, this offset portion 2| is disposed at the lowermost portion of the housing I5 and opens into the lowermost portion of the chamber 26 within the main housing. Consequently, there is communication between the chamber 26 and the chamber 29 within the oiset portion 2|. From Figure 4 it will be noted that the width of the mouth 25 is substantially the width of the chambers 26 and 29.
Carried by the housing I5 and projecting preferably substantially horizontal from the rearward end wall I8, may be a hand grip 30. This han-d grip 3.0 is disposed above and spaced from the offset portion 2| so that the operator, grasping the hand grip 30, may extend his fingers into the space 3| between the hand grip 30 and 0E- set portion 2|. The hand grip 30 may be circular in transverse cross section and is considerably of less diameter than the width of the orfset portion 2|. If desired, a bridge 32 may join the offset portion 2| and hand grip 30 at the rearward end 33 of the latter. Extending through the hand grip 30 may be a bore 34 accommodating a conductor to be later described as well as electric switch means associated with said conductor. This bore 34 extends to and opens into the chamber 26.
The side wall I8 of the housing I5 may be provided with an opening 35 and a hinged closure 36 therefor. Suitable latches 3l may be provided. to retainthisrclosure in a closed position. Furthermore, the closure 36 may have a pair of spaced apart perforations 38, providing bearings for a pair of spindles later described. The opposite side wall |9 may have a pair of spaced apart circular recesses 39 with the axes of one perforation 38 and recess 39 in alignment and the axes of the other perforation 38 and recess 39 in alignment.
Carried by theA housing l5, are, preferably, a
pair of spaced apart rotating members or rollers 40. Each roller 40 preferably has flat, paralleling end faces 4|. From one endvface 4| of each` extends a spindle 42 and fromtheV opposite end face 4I extends a spindle 43 provided with a pulley or wheel 44. The spindlesv 42 extend into the perforations 38 when the closure 36 is closed. As for the spindles 43, they may be provided with suitable ball bearings and housings 45 en-Y circling the end portions of the spindles 43 and accommodated within the recesses 39.
Preferably, each'roller `40 is provided with a plurality of spaced apart longitudinally extend ing peripheral' grooves 46. `VThese grooves 46 are V-shaped; Aasgviewed' from thev end faces 4| of the rollers 40 and, preferably, three of Vsuch groovesY 46 areY provided, equally Aspaced apart over the periphery of the rollers 4|l. Each roller 4U may carry a second form of peripheral groove 41, extending longitudinally ofthe roller. This groove 41 preferably has facing side walls 58 and a bottom 49 whichmay be arcuate or flat, but, preferably, arcuate. The groove 49 is relatively wider than grooves 46 and may be spaced an equal distance `from the two nearest grooves 46. As may be seen from Figures 1 to 3, the axes of rotation of the rollers 40 are disposed so that a portion of the rollers extends below the bottom of the housing '|5. It should also be noted that the mouth 25 of the offset portion 2| faces the periphery of one of the rollers 40, being disposed` so that the plane of the inner surface'of the upper wall 23 of the oifset portion 2| extends to about or above the axis of the nearest roller and thatY the'plane of the inner surface of the lower wall 24 of the oiset portion 2| extends well below thisaxis. The nearest adjacentv roller is, preferably, spaced quite closely to the mouth 25. The
direction'of rotation of the rollers 40 is indicated by arrows in Figure k3 and material removed by the abrasive employed on the rollers 4|lwi1l be thrownmainly into the compartment within the offset 4portion 2|.
Any approved means may be'employed to rotate therollers 40 (thru the medium of'a gear drive, a chain drive or abelt and pulley). In the Yexample shown, a conventional Vmotor 58 is employed in association with a belt and pulleys and secured,\for example,` to the wall I6 so that it will be above of and clear of the rollers 40. A suitable conductor may be connected with the motor, as is well known in the art, and extend through the bore 34 in the hand grip 3U and project from thence to any suitable source of electric energy. If desired, thehand grip 40 may carry a conventional electric switch, having a switch actuator or button 52 and operatively connected with the conductor 5|, as is'well known in the art.
From the pulley 53 of the motor 50 may extend a suitable belt 54, operatively connected with the pulleys 44 upon the spindles- 43.
Any approved means may also be employed, if desired, to resiliently urge the housing I5 upwardly sothat, normally, the peripheries of the rollers 40"wil1`be spacedabove a'y surface when the machine is resting upon said surface. In the example shown, a plurality of spaced apart castors 55 may be resiliently mounted, as is generally well known in the art, and disposed at suitable positions, extending below the housing |5 as shown in Figures l to 3. When a slight down'- ward pressure is placed upon the handle grip 30, the entire housing will be lowered so that abrading material upon the peripheries of the rollers 4|) will come into contact with the surface to be worked upon by the abrading machine.
Now as for the abrading devices B, any selected two of whichmay be employed by the abrading machine at one time. Each of these includes a 4tubular member 6D, with the circumference of member 68 is also provided with va longitudinally extending slot 62, having a Width less than the width of the grooves 41 of the rollers'40 so that, when the tubular members 60 are upon the roll- Vers 48,-a portion of the tubularA members will overhang the grooves 41 when a slot 62 of one tubular member 69 is over a groove 41 of one roller 48, -as shown in Figure 3, providing by this arrangement, a substantially T-shaped groove. The lugs 6| are accommodated within the V- shaped grooves 46.
The section of abrading material C maycomprise a suitable length 10 of flexible material having a coating '1| of adhesive lretaining' an abrasive 12, such as grit, thereon. The length of this section of abrasive material C is preferably v slightly greater than the circumference of the outer periphery of the tubular members 60 and its width maybe substantially the same as that v of the tubular members 60. The length 10 of flexible material may have two substantially like side edge portions 13, free of grit, and each provided with a length14 of material, substantially U-shaped in transverse cross section, extending along the edges of the edge portions 13 and overlapping a part of these portions. These lengths 14 of material may be ribbons of metal, suitably bent to the proper U-shape, and secured to the edge portions 13 in any approved way, such as by the use of adhesive. They not only protect these edge portions against tearing, but they are also provided so that when-the sections C are disposed about the outer peripheries of the tubular members 60, with the abrasive 12 outwardly, the edge portions 13 will be accommodated within the grooves-41, with the adjacent portions of the sections C extending through the slots62. The sections of abrasive material D are retained upon the tubular members 60 and rollers 40 simply by thisgripping action between the vportions of the sections C within the slots and grooves and the walls of these slots 'and grooves, plus the contact of the sections C with the peripheries of the tubular members 60. Since sections of abrasive material may be provided,
carrying various sizes of abrasive 12, it is apparent thatY a selection of sectionsC may be provided and from this selection the proper sections chosen for a particular job.
The abrasive device D includes a tubular member 80, with the circumference of the inner pe- -riphery thereof f of a size vso that it will be snugly accommodated upon the rollers 4|).Y AEach tubular member is provided with a plurality of lugs or projections 8|, V-shaped in transverse cross section and these extend longitudinally of the tubular members 80 from the inner peripheries thereof. The tubular members 80 may have, extending from their outer peripheries, suitable abrasive material, in this case, Wire or similar bristles 82.
The abrasive device E includes a tubular member 90, with the circumference of the inner periphery thereof of a size so that it will be snugly accommodated upon the rollers 40. Each tubular member is provided with a plurality of spaced apart lugs or projections 9|, V-shaped in transverse cross section, and these extend longitudinally of the tubular members 60 from the inner peripheries thereof. The outer peripheries of the tubular members 90 may be scored, or grooved, as at 92, to provide an abrasive surface, similar to the surface of a iile or rasp depending upon the material to be Worked.
From the above, it will be seen that a novel abrading machine has been provided so that it may be easily and expeditiously equipped with any selected tubular member, such as B, D or E, simply by unlatching the closure 36. raising the closure and slipping suitable abrading devices over the rollers 40, the lugs 6|, 8| or 9|, dependent upon the abrading device employed, fitting into the grooves 46 of the rollers 40, whereupon the abrading devices will be held again at independent rotation, Whereupon the closure 36 may be lowered and the perforations 38 accommodate the spindles 42 of the rollers 4|).
When the machine is in use, most of the material removed by the abrading devices Will be projected into the chamber Within the offset portion 2| of the housing |5 and this offset portion 2| will also protect the hand of the operator against injury when the hand grasps the hand grip, since the offset portion is relatively broad and is below the hand grip.
The Work may then proceed until it is desirable to substitute, for the abrading devices then in the machine, others having a different abrading surface and it is now apparent that the substitution may be easily made.
'I'he abrading devices B, D and E are easily stored and may be grouped according to abrasive surfaces, so that little time may be employed in selecting the proper device.
Since a sandpaper abrasive wears down relatively quickly, by providing the abrasive section C, a Worn abrasive section C may be quickly removed and a new section C may be applied, as is now apparent.
Various changes may be made to the form of invention herein shown and described, Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In an abrading machine, a housing, a roller rotatably carried by said housing and provided with a substantially V-shaped peripheral groove and a second peripheral groove having substantially paralleling side walls, said grooves being spaced apart and extending longitudinally of said roller, a tubular member detachably mounted upon said roller, having a V-shaped lug projecting from the inner periphery thereof and extending longitudinally of said tubular member with said V-shaped lug accommodated in said V- shaped groove, said tubular member being provided With a longitudinally extending slot having a width less than the width of the second named groove and disposed over said second named groove, and a section of abrading material removably extending over the periphery of said tubular member, with the end portions of said section extending through said slot and into the second named groove.
2. In an abrading machine, a housing, a roller rotatably carried by said housing and provided with a substantially V-shaped peripheral groove and a second peripheral groove having substantially paralleling side Walls, said grooves being spaced apart and extending longitudinally of said roller, a tubular member detachably mounted upon said roller, having a V-shaped lug projecting from the inner periphery thereof and extending longitudinally of said tubular member With said V-shaped lug accommodated in said V- shaped groove, said tubular member being provided with a longitudinally extending slot having a width less than the width of the second named groove and disposed over said second named groove, and a section of abrading material removably extending over the periphery of said tubular member, with the end portions of said section extending through said slot and into the second named groove andv into engagement With the overlying inner face of said tubular member and the Walls of said second named groove.
