Description

A. WEISS.
SUCTION GRINDING AND POLISHING MACHINE.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 8- 1920.
I Patented Mar. 7,1922.
///Z/// W/w a r 6 M/ M UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' ABRAHAI WEISS, OF NEW YORK, N. .Y.
SUCTION GRINDING AND POLISHING MACHINE To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM Wales, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county and State of New York, have, invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suction Grinding and Polishing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for one'of its objects to provide a perforate abrading surface for finishing articles particularly the soles and heels of leather shoes by grinding the same smooth and freefrom roughness or irregularities, the surface taking'the form of a roll, or wheel as may be most conveniently used.
Another object is to provide a perforate driver for the abrading element used, the driver being of hollow construction and engaged with a suction device .whereby the dust and particles removed from the article are drawn in and carried away, relieving the air and surroundings from unhealthy and filthy conditions usually attendant upon such operations. p a
These objects are attained by'the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompan ing drawings, forming a material part of t is disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevational view of an abrasive roll and connections made in ac- .cordance with the invention.
vFigure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the center of the same.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken through the roll, bench and guard.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary 'plan view of the roll covering.
Referring to Figures 1 to 3 of the drawings in detail, the numeral 50 designates a hollow shaft adapted for rotation in bearings (not shown) and provided at one end with a conical enlargement 51 rotatable in a sleeve 52 in which is threaded an ada ter;
55 through which pass cotter pins63 or like fastenings, the same passing entirely Specification of Letters Patent.

through the shaft and spread at their lower ends as indicated, the drum being so located on the shaft as to enclose the slots 58. r
A plurality of staggered or offset openings 64: are formed through the peripheral wall of the drum, which also contains a longitudinal undercut slot 65 to receive the abutting ends of a strip of abrasive material, as sand-paper, emery-cloth or the like 66 wrapped tightly and smoothly around the drum, the ends being secured by a wedge 67 or like fastener. I This abrasive stri 66 contains a plurality of openings 68, which are adjusted and caused to register with the openings 64;, thus providing a plurality of clear unobstructed passages leadlng to the interior of the drum and from thence through the slots 58 to the interior of the hollow shaft so that all dust particles are removed as vto be operated upon to the face of the-revolvin drum.
Having thus described my invention, explained its manner of operation and construction, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An abrading device. comprising in combination, a hollow shaft engaged with a suction means, a drum fixed on said shaft communicatin with the interior, said drum having a per orate periphery containing alongitudinal slot, a flat strip ofabrasivematerial containing perforations registerable with the perforations in said drum, and means for securing the ends of said strip within the slot contained in the drum.
2. An abradin device comprising in combination, a ho low shaftengaged with a suction means, said shaft having openings through its walls, a perforate drum removably secured to said shaft enclosing the mentioned openings, a perforate sheet of abrasive material covering said drum, and means for detachably engaging said covering at its ends to said drum.
3. An 'abrading device comprising in combination, a hollow shaft rotatably mounted, a flexible tube'engaged at one end of said shaft leading to a suction chamber, said shaft containing a plurality of grouped phery and containing an undercut longitudinal slot, means for removably engaging said drum to said shaft to cover the mentioned openings, a perforate strip of abrasive material removably enveloping said drum, the perforations in said strip and drum being'in register, and a key for securing the ends of said strip in the slot of said 10 drum.
4. An abrading device comprising a perforated drum, suction connection with said drum, a band of abrasive material containing perforations, means for detachably Securing said band to the drum hubs at the ends of said drum, a hollow shaft communieating with the interior of the drum, and means for removably engaging said drum to said shaft.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
